I had a backup program seemingly run amok. It created a catalog file that was 32GB on my 76GB C drive, which only had 30GB of data. I deleted the catalog file, but that did not appear to free up any disk space. I ran CHKDSK before and after deleting the catalog and also checked the drive’s properties in Explorer. Both show only 13GB of free space, before and after and no errors. The Disk Management console also shows only 13GB free. Yet if I check the folder where the catalog was, it’s now empty, and if I check the properties of the root and each top level folder on the C drive, the sizes add up to about 30GB, which is what it should be. Any thoughts about how to find the 32GB of lost space?

Did you actually delete it or just send it to the Recycle Bin?

I deleted it. It was too big for the recycle bin, which is about 2GB. However, on checking the drive properties today, my free space is back to around 50GB. The NTFS must take its time to recognize that space has become free. Really weird.
