Long Shutdown Time (Window XP Professional)

I am recently experiencing very long shutdown times. The screen “Windows is Shutting Down” remains fixed for over 8 minutes, and then the system either restart or shutsdown depending on which option I selected. No programs are running in Task Manger at the time I shut down. The same problem occurs if I elect to shutdown immediately after a a restart. It appears that some program running in the background is slow to shutdown. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

Do you happen to have “clear pagefile at shutdown” enabled? I have found this will slow shutdown considerably.
You can read about enabling this at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314834%5B/url%5D (MSKB # 314834) To DISABLE this just set the value to “0” instead of “1”.

I have never set or enabled Clear Page File at Shutdown unless it was done automatically by some program I installed. Is there some way to check this other than diving into the registry?

I checked my registry. The value is set to 0 thus Clear Pagefile is not enabled.

Jim, take a look at the Event Viewer to see if there are any notations about services or applications not responding. That’s the first thing to check.

No entries in Event Viewer indicate that there are any nonresponding services or applications.

Check your firewall. My computer took 7 minutes to shut down. When I reloaded ZA the slow shut down disappeared.
