I notice that after I boot up my computer and am on the login screen, WinXP shows the number of unread emails that I have. Is that normal? I don’t remember I had this msg before. It is not a popup msg. It is shown right next to the login icon.

    Thanks

Yes, it is normal. What it shows is the number of unread messages in the Inbox of your default mail application. If you route your incoming messages to several folders, then the statistics are misleading. It is probably of more value when you log out or switch users than it is on botting up. HTH

Thanks. I was just concerned that someone might have hacked into my computer.

        Thanks again.

On the other side, if you don’t need it, you can disable it very easily with TweakUI.

How would I be able to do so? Can you give me some hints?

            thanks

You can download TweakUI here. Install it, run it, go to Logon > Unread mail and uncheck “Show unread mail on Welcome screen” in the right pane.

Thanks but after I had downloaded it from Microsoft and tried to install it, I got an error msg saying that it is not a valid win32 app.

Looks like you downloaded the 64-bit version – try the link above it…

              Thanks, it works.

Do you know how to clear this message when there are no unread messages? All my messages have been opened and read but I still have the message that I have 1 new unread message. I don’t want to disable it because I actually like this little reminder, but at this point it is not doing me any good.
        Thanks.

Do you have anything in your Junk folder in your PST file? Sometimes this will do it.

Also make sure that you do not have a unread file buried down in one of the sub folders.

At one time there was a “issue” that always added one message, but I thought it was taken care of by SP1.

For some reason, when I started my comp this morning the unread e-mail message was gone. The only this was last night prior to shutting down, that I had downloaded some windows xp updates (not sp1, though since I already had it) and installed them and I rechecked the “check of publishers certificate revocation” box. Who knows?
I would like to know how to acces the Junk folder in my PST file for future references.
            Thanks again.

If you have the Junk and adult filters turned on, it will be listed.
