• List Bullet doesn’t restart (2000)

    Hi,

In the attached document, I use the List Bullet 2 style twice, in two different numbered lists. The second time it appears, it continues the numbering of the first instance. I’ve tried different ways to restart it within Word (menu, macros), but have had no luck. I haven’t tried working with the text in a new document, and then pasting it back in, because I’m trying to find a general solution to this problem that I can apply when it happens again.

I’ve also attached the template that’s used with that document. Maybe someone can reproduce the problem and maybe figure out how to solve it.

    Thanks,
    Bob

I’m sorry, I meant the List Number 2 style.

This kind of list is much easier to manage by using “Outline Numbered” lists, and setting the indent levels. I have modified the List Number to use an outline number that has 1. 2. 3. etc for level 1 and a) c) etc for level 2, does this do what you want?

Select the second range of paragraphs with the List Number style (they are numbered 1 through 4).
Press Ctrl+Q to rest paragraph formatting. This will also make the numbering continue from the first range (the paragraphs are now numbered 8 through 11).
Right-click and select Restart Numbering (the paragraphs will be numbered 1 through 4 again).
Right-click the first paragraph of the second range with the List Number 2 style (numbered d) and select Restart Numbering.

If I create a new document from the template, numbering behaves OK.

Both suggestions worked. For my purposes, Hans’ solution is probably the best route.

I’ve also been working in FrameMaker, and they have a first number style that makes numbered lists a lot easier to manage. Apparently, this style disrupts the continuous numbering that goes from list to list and restarts the numbering. I wonder why Word hasn’t come up with a similar style (maybe they have; I’m still using Word 2000).

Thanks for both of your suggestions,
        Bob
