Did a little testing of the Cinnamon 22.1 beta via a bootable USB stick. Everything seemed to work well. You would not know it’s a beta, which is common in my experience using Linux Mint the last two years. They often do a very good job with the beta and then use it primarily for users who want to test and report bugs before the final stable release.

It booted up normally, exactly the same as my install of 21.2 with the 6.8 kernel on the SSD although obviously slower since it’s running from a USB. I was able to use Driver Manager to install drivers for the NVIDIA GT 730 graphics card (no reboot required after install). As a test, Citrix ICA Client (Workspace App) 2411 and Proton mail bridge installed (from previously downloaded/saved .deb files) and worked normally.

However, the new Night Light function built into Cinnamon needs more work. In particular it needs a more precise method of determining your location (ex. entering latitude and longitude) other than using the system time zone, so it better matches your local sunrise and sunset times. It also seemed to always be affecting the screen color even during the daytime when it should not be applying any change. The slider bar for color temperature in the settings did not help. The only way to stop that effect was to disable/shutdown Night Light. Whereas with Redshift on my 21.2 system, it does not do that, there is no difference during the day whether Redshift is running or not. Also, Night Light does not appear to have a system tray option like Redshift where I can hover the mouse over it and easily see color temperature and day/night or transition status (when it slowly transitions color between day/night or night/day).

While I like the new darker tones and newly designed confirmation dialogs in Cinnamon 6.4, I do not like the rounded corners on everything. It reminds me of Windows 11 on my work computer. Also do not like the new on-screen volume display. It no longer shows the percentage like the old one, which gives a quick and more precise indication of the volume level.

So I’ll be staying on 21.2 for the foreseeable future as it works well for me and is still supported until 2027. Will re-evaluate things again with 22.2 in the summer 2025. Perhaps some of these things will be addressed/improved by then.

        Hi everyone,

The BETA phase for Linux Mint 22.1 is now over. 115 reports were received and many bugs were fixed. Many thanks for your help during this beta-test!

After a few days of QA testing we’ll be ready to publish the stable release. The new features will then make their way towards LMDE and we’ll open up the upgrade path for Linux Mint 22…
