I am helping a friend set up a Linksys wireless router that is two years old and does not have any warranty left and Linksys want a one time fee of$30.00 to tell me where to find the security key so I can set up the wireless side of her router. Can anyone tell me what screen in the router configuration I can find it?

Click on the Wireless tab, then Wireless Security beneath that. The key should be listed there.

Open browser, then type http://192.168.1.1 enter

You will have to enter the ID default is “admin” and password (Not sure what default is)

Hi there.

The very first thing that you should do is go to the Linksys website and download the manual for your router. Be careful – you probably need to know which version of that particular router you have. The version number is on the spec label on the bottom of the router.

The manual will guide you to setting up the router.

You talk about the security or password page for the router. Do you know if the router has a general password applied or are you just looking for the wi-fi password page?

I suppose that I should back up a little. Can you get into the router’s setup pages with your web-browser? The default address for a Linksys router is 192.168.1.1

Type that address into your browser and see what happens. If it asks you for a password and you don’t know what the password is, you will have to do a factory-default reset on the router. The manual that you downloaded (as per above) will tell you how to do that. You DID go and download that manual, didn’t you? .

If you DID get to the setup page of the router when you typed in that address, go to the wireless setup page. That is in different locations, depending upon exactly which Linksys router you have. But its easy to find.

On the other hand, if you get no response when you type in that address of 192.168.1.1, its probable that someone has changed the default address on the router. You have a couple of choices:

1) find that default address by asking the computer connected to the router what the address is. If running Win XP, open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd [Enter], then type in ipconfig /all .The list that shows up contains the address that the router is set to. Type in the first 9 numbers (with periods in the right places) but end with .1 . For example, the computer might be report that it connected to 192.168.2.101 . You would browse to 192.168.2.1 to get to the setup page.

2) Reset the router to factory defaults, then go to the factory-defined setup page address.

I’d prefer to do (1) above first – that lets you see if the router has any custom settings that you need to preserve. That would be things like PPoE, hard-coded WAN addresses or DNS addresses, etc. You lose all those settings if you restore the router to factory defaults.

Anyway, try the above items and get back to us when you have done so.
