    A colleague has a Publisher file with links to 2 MSWord documents. (Running under Windows Me). The links used to work fine.
    Now, on opening the Publisher file, when Publisher is updating the links, he gets the message “Cannot update object. Windows may be low on memory or disk or an object may not be correctly registered.”
    Double clicking on either of the linked files in Publisher brings up the message: “Publisher cannot launch or communicate with the OLE server program needed to complete this task. There may not be enough disk, or there may be a problem with the server program. If you suspect a problem with the server program, try reinstalling it. Then try this task again.”

    What server program is it talking about?

      ——————————————————————————-
      The information in this article applies to:

      – Microsoft Publisher 2000
      ——————————————————————————-

      SYMPTOMS
      ========

      You may receive the following error messages, when you open a Publisher document
      that contains a linked object:

      – When the server application is renamed:

      Cannot update object. Windows may be low on memory or disk space, or an
      object may not be correctly registered.

      – When you double-click the object:

      Publisher cannot launch or communicate with the OLE server program needed to
      complete this task.

      There may not be enough disk space, or there may be a problem with the server
      program. To make more disk space available, delete some unneeded files on
      your hard disk. If you suspect a problem with the server program, try
      reinstalling it. Then try this task again.

      CAUSE
      =====

      The path in the Windows Registry to the server application is incorrect.

      WORKAROUND
      ==========

      Reinstall the server application to rewrite the registry entries.

        May have found a get round for this myself – somewhat belatedly because it happened on my own PC.

        I have MSOffice 2000 installed on the D: drive. I think Publisher expects it to be on the C: drive. I therefore created a shortcut to D:PROGRAM FILESMSOFFICEOFFICEWINWORD.EXE in the C:PROGRAM FILESMSOFFICEOFFICE folder and, lo and behold, the OLE Server bit works again. smile
