When I right click on a webpage then select Create a Shortcut, the shortcut is placed on my desktop. But when I click on the icon I get an error msg:
“This file does not have a program associated with it…. Create an association in the Folder Options in your control panel”

How do I do this? Be specific.

What icon does the shortcut have? Is it the Internet Explorer icon? If you right-click the icon and select properties, what is it showing?

• #692155

Sparky
It’s the IE icon. When I rt click>> properties I get a 3 tab box Which are you asking about?
I’ve forgotten how to take a snapshot or I would do that. to send along

Hi, Paul ~

I am going to assume you are using Internet Explorer:

• Close all IE windows and open ‘My Documents’
• From the menu bar > ‘Tools’ > ‘Folder Options…’ > ‘File Types’ tab
• Scroll down to and select ‘URL Internet Shortcut’
• Click the ‘Advanced’ button
• Under ‘Actions’ select ‘open’
• Click the ‘Edit…’ button
• Under ‘Application used to perform action:’ enter or copy and paste this exactly:
“C:Program FilesInternet Exploreriexplore.exe” %1
• Click ‘OK’
• Click ‘OK’
• Click ‘Apply’ > ‘Close’
Hi Bruce:
That’s funny. My options (Win98SE) say

rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

• #692249

Ditto on XP Home SP1?

• #692260

Hi, Phil ~

Maybe because of 98SE? I haven’t tried it in 98, but I would imagine it would produce the same results.

• #692276

Bruce,
I tried

“C:Program FilesInternet Exploreriexplore.exe” %1
but got the same error msg, even after rebooting, and trying a new web link.

I didn’t write down what was there before but it looked much closer to Phil’s
If this doesn’t work I’m concerned about getting back to sq one. should I try Phil’s code line?

BTW in my Folders Option I did not find exactly the “URL Internet Shortcut” item.
What I did find was: The Icon N/A Internet Shortcut

Thanks for the snapshots Jefferson and the method reminder Sparky.

Mine (Windows 2k) looks the same except the URL is replaced with N/A

Jefferson, can you tell me if the very last character in the command line
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %I
is an upper case i; a lowercase L; or a verticle line?

Here’s another thought: Periodically, (maybe 5% of the time that I log on to the internet) I get an error msg saying the program can’t find a dll (something about a Q-agent). could this have anything to do with why I’m seeing the N/A rather than URL after the IE icon? How can I reload this missing dll?

• #692330

Jefferson is probably asleep at the moment. The last character is a lower case L. This is the complete string:

rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

About your other question: QAgent is used by Quicken (financial software) to check for updates on the Internet. If you have Quicken, you can disable it by going to One Step Update | Configure, Connection tab, and select “Don’t use background downloading”.

• #692357

Ok. I found the correct URL Internet Shortcut
and used the line rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
Still get the same error msg
I’ll try a snapshot. —– I can’t seem to figure out how to paste the snapshot directly in this post so I’ll put it in a word doc and attach it

• #692394

Once you have placed a screenshot on the clipboard, you can paste it into a graphics application, such as Paint (comes with Windows), or Photo Editor (comes with MS Office), or IrfanView, or … From one of these applications, save the picture as a .png or .jpg file (.bmp is usually too big, and .gif too grainy in many cases).

The screenshot in your attachment looks identical to what I have, so apparently the cause lies somewhere else. Maybe Windows or Internet Explorer is damaged. For a first check, keep your Windows CD at hand and:
Click Start | Run…
Enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
This will scan and, if necessary, repair system files.

Others with more expertise in this area will no doubt have more/better suggestions.

Hi Paul

Could you please do the following:
– Right click on the icon on your desktop
– Select properties
– Click the Web Document tab
– Highlight and copy the complete url
– Paste the url into a post here for us to look at.

Perhaps there is something in the url that is causing your problem.

Have a Great day!!!
Ken

• #692576

Here is a copy and paste to avoid typos. I see the forward slash at the end. Is that suppose to be there?

http://strategicfinancialplanning.com/

• #692671

Hi Paul

The link is OK, with or without the forward slash at the end.

Could you please try a couple more things:
– Copy the shortcut from your desktop to any folder of your choice on your hard drive. Close any/all IE windows, and double click the shortcut you just pasted.
– Open a new blank page in Word. Then copy and paste the link into the page as a hyperlink (“Insert”>”Hyperlink”). Close any/all IE windows, and double click the link.
Let us know what happens.

Do you have a browser other than IE that you can set as your default browser to experiment with?

Have a Great day!!!
Ken

• #692691

Ken
When I copied/pasted the shortcut from my desktop to a folder and highlited the graphic, a thumbnail view of the web page appeared on the left side of the open folder. When I clicked on the graphic again, I got the same error msg.

When I opened a Word doc >>Insert>>Hyperlink>>DblClick One of the http:// links in the box, that link was pasted in the text box of the dialog and immediately it appeared in the Word doc. When I clicked on the text link it opened IE and went to the website.

I only have IE as far as I know. Maybe a netscape that I have never used???

• #692694

One other slight difference I have noticed since changing the Folder Option as per above: In the upper portion of my browser window there is a bar of Links. After each IE icon is the name of the Link Site. Each of these NOW has
“.url”

after it which was not there before.

Can you look for these registry entries and see if you have the same / different…

Stuart,

Will look for the Registry entries, but first you’ll have to tell me how to get there. I haven’t a clue.
(Step by step, please)

Thanks,

• #692833

Click Start | Run…
Type regedit into the box, then press Enter.
You can navigate the registry like Windows Explorer.
To find the entries mentioned by Stuart quickly, select Edit | Find… (or press Ctrl+F)
Paste the long string FBF23B40-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8 into the “Find what” box and click Find Next until you reach the part mentioned by Stuart. You can see the value of keys in the right hand pane.

• #693138

GoCush — do me another favor. Get several pieces of the registry and paste the contents here. I want to see:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.url
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTInternet Shortcut
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{FBF23B40-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}

Open regedit and drill down to each of those keys — and selelct the key name. Then, go to the the Tool bar up top and select Registry | Export Registry File. Export each key to your Desktop with a unique name.

Then, find those files on your Desktop and right-click on each and select “Edit”. This opens the files in Notepad. Select/Copy the entire text and paste them all here.

That is the best way to get to the bottom of this…
Periodically, (maybe 5% of the time that I log on to the internet) I get an error msg saying the program can’t find a dll (something about a Q-agent).
Paul,
This is a bit late, and somewhat off point, but I believe that Q-agent is part of Quicken. Do you use Quicken and it’s related internet services ?? That may be the source of this particular error message.

• #692909

Doc
That is correct and I have disabled the background downloading as per above reference to this topic. Haven’t noticed the error msg since.
Thanks,

• #693097

And in that exchange between you and Hans above, I think he’s using the NUMBER ONE (%1) and yours looks like you’re using the LOWERCASE LETTER L (%l). Are my eyes getting worse, or what?

• #693100

Al,

As I wrote in post 272884, it is a lower case L on my PC (Windows XP Home SP1).

• #693103

Well I’ll be….. censored Sorry, Hans, you’re absolutely right. Never seen anything like it before – that parm is (always) a percent-one, but it IS also a lower case L on my XP Pro as well. I guess I never noticed the similarity betweel the ell and the one in the default font. I pasted it in to Word, typed in several of both characters and changed the font to Arial and lo and behold. Sorry again for taking the thread off the path…..

Alt + Print Screen to copy the active window, then paste to desired location.

Hi, Easiest way to put a link on your desktop is to drag the icon in the address bar onto your desktop. Just move the Web page over to the right and drag the icon. Hope this helps.
