I’m trying to split an Access Project into a front end and back end. When I try to link tables from the SQL server, the link option under File, Get External Data is not there.

Searching the web, I’ve updated to SR8 because Access may have been in sandbox mode. This update did not fix the problems. The ODBC driver is installed.

Access Projects (ADPs) are automatically split – the part you see in Access is the front-end, the back-end is in SQL Server. So you don’t link SQL Server tables in projects, they are connected to directly using ADO in general. If you want to use ODBC links, you must use MDBs, which use the Jet interface (that’s what the SR8 service release updates). If you are seriously contemplating using an Access project, you will find the support for them in 2002 (XP) or 2003 to be significantly better. If you have further questions, please post back and we’ll do our best to clarify things.
