I just started updating my new LG Gram15 laptop when a screen offering a free version of Laplink popped up on the screen. I assumed it was bundled by LG with the new machine. Without thinking clearly I decided that would be a good way to transfer everything from my older Windows 10 LG Gram to the new, Windows 11 machine. So I downloaded Laplink on to my old machine and put both on the network. The two computers “found” each other and, regrettably, without reading the manual I proceeded with the transfer. Things ground away for 20 hours and reported transfer complete. The result was a bricked new LG Gram. The new Gram would no longer boot up and demanded a Bit Locker “Recovery Key”. I was able to find the key on my Microsoft account but, after entering it multiple times in many attempts to boot, and “repair” the startup failure, nothing worked.
I then gave up and had to undo a security setting in the bios and do a fresh install of Win 11 (which seems to be working) but I now have none of LG’s helpful software on the new machine. As you can see, I am practically clueless on modern Windows practices. My question though is–has anyone else experienced Laplink bricking a target machine during a transfer. And, what should I have done differently to have an orderly recovery.
