Legitimate keylogger program?

Hi, I’m looking for legitimate keylogger or keyboard recording software (preferably freeware) for a desktop PC running Windows XP that my mom and brother use exclusively. I did a Google search and found pages and pages of information, but my initial thought was, how do I know any of this software won’t report back to momma if I download and install it?? I need something that’s easy and safe (my mom’s 82 and getting forgetful, my brother’s schizoaffective and has his own issues). Any ideas?

Try Spectorsoft’s keylogger. Not sure why you want to use it, but there may be legal issues if you plan to install it on a PC you don’t own.

Hi : IF at all possible, I recommend against all “keylogger” programming ; you never know when and IF what seems to be a “legitimate” or “good” keylogger may turn on you !? It seems you should look into what is called “Parental Control” software, though you would be using it in a slightly different way than usual . I feel the best in this category are “K9 Web Protection” ( which seems to be FREE ), “Safe Eyes” and “Net Nanny” .

Better yet! The whole keylogger thing frightens me a little, but if there’s software that does what I’m looking for without going over to the “dark side”, I’m happier yet! Thanks so much for the suggestions, SpiritWind .. not ever having had kids, I was unaware of Parental Control software.

Thanks for the suggestion. There are several reasons I’d like to install this kind of software .. my mom frequently forgets her passwords (won’t write them down), and then can’t get in to several of her favorite sites; I’ll often go down for the day to take my mom out shopping and run scans while I’m there because I can’t get either of them to do it regularly, and I’ll discover that an icon (or three) has disappeared off the desktop .. and they haven’t a clue where it went, and don’t know how to get into the program without it (I’ve tried explaining about the Program list in Start, honest); I’ve had to clean off some nasty crap over the years, and know it’s not sites my mom’s visiting that’s the problem, so I’m interested in where my brother’s going. And while the PC is an hour away, it does indeed belong to me .. and I have no intention of being sneaky about loading a program to oversee what the two of them are doing. I’ve spoke to both of them about the possibility.

TheWildInside, it seems to me that what you really want is not a Keylogger Program, but a Password Revealer Program. GIYF (“Google Is Your Friend”) for one — or, even better still, browse one of the reputable sites for free file downloads such as CNet, TuCows, Softpedia, or MajorGeeks — there must be a couple hundred of them Out There. It seems that you are a good boy of your mum, if you want to help her remember the passwords, you can download a RoboForm and install on her computer, it is a kind of tool which can record the passwords, automatically fill the forms. If you want to know what sites she has visited, you can see the web history.
If you have more requires, then you may consider to use a keylogger.

I will not recommend this Spectorso**’s keylogger because I used it at once…it gives hell out of PC hanging and hell their technical team are just pathetic. They even won’t picking up call whether I tried many times.

I agree .. looks like exactly what I need .. and with remote monitoring, too! Perfect. Well … almost perfect. But $40 for the basic program isn’t bad. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply!

Well… Even considering myself an liberal admin and user, I can see some (very) narrow niches of the real world where monitoring software can fit legitimately and moraly. Being a fan of open source movement, I would suggest http://www.keylogger.org/monitoring-free-software-review/open-source-keylogger/tesline-kidlogger.html if you want it nice-and-easy or http://sourceforge.net/projects/pykeylogger/ if you like to nose-dive in customizing your apps…
BTW, http://www.google.ro/search?hl=&q=open%20source%20keylogger%20site%3Asourceforge.net will give you a bunch of such monitoring software that can be easy to review (remember: source available!).

I second the suggestion for Refog.
I have been using it for several years now on my own computers.

It solves the problem of writing a long comment or letter in some browser-based format, and then hitting the backspace key with the wrong focus, or otherwise losing all the composing. Just pop open the software and copy your text back out!
The way I have it set up, I can go back and see my “breadcrumbs”, which does help me if I am trying to remember what website I saw something on, etc. (yes, I know, it leaves my tracks wide open for anybody else looking at the computer, but I have to be careful about that anyway, and I have the logger running in stealth mode and password protected)
They have full-featured software that does a lot more than just keylogging, including being able to ftp or email the logs, take screen captures, etc, etc.

This happened to help me when I was going through a divorce, since she was using my log-in on our shared computer. It prevented some things from happening that we both would have regretted! It allowed me to find out what she was trying to hide so I could ask the right questions. I did get yelled at when she found out about it, but she got over it! If it had been a messy divorce like many, it could have been a lifesaver. (and it was completely legal, since it was a computer I had rights to access at will)

If I remember correctly, Refog did have parental controls as well. I know they had a Parental Control Suite, but I don’t remember if it was part of the logging package.

Bottom line, I would recommend installing logging software on your computer anyway, and I have been happy with Refog, but get the features you need.

I have used Spectrosoft and it did exactly what it was supposed to do. Great piece of software and well worth the money (At least in my case) But make sure YOU OWN the computer(s) involved.

I strongly encourage the use of http://opendns.org for website protection / logging. If you want to know where this PC (or any PC on your home network, including wireless devices) have been going, opendns logs all website requests. You can block certain categories, or you can let the request go through and just have it logged for your later checking (you can also check remotely). It also protects against known phishing and other ‘baddy’ sites.

opendns is a pretty good parental control service but it seems that it can not be used as a keylogger monitoring tool.

Once you are logged in, go to the ‘Dashboard’ and you’ll find a raft of statistics there.
If you have OpenDNS configured at the router (which is more secure), then the statistics are for your whole network.
If you have it configured at each PC or device, then the stats apply to that device.
