LDAP directory problem (Outlook 2002)

Hi, everyone.

I just got a pocket pc, and the CD included Outlook 2002. I decided to install it (I was running Outlook 2000 sp1), but now everytime I open Outlook I get a dialog box called “Microsoft LDAP Directory” and it has several blanks to fill in. Server Name (currently has NULL entered, and is greyed out) Port (3268, also greyed out) User Name, and Password (which it seems I could fill in…) I have to click ok or cancel to get past this box. I have to click through this box several times while syncing to the PPC, once for each outlook item. When I try to write a message, using the address book, I get the message “cannot access LDAP server (81)” and have to close Outlook down with ALT-f4 (the program freezes).

Any idea what I’ve done wrong, and how to fix it?

Replies

Go to Tools > Email Accounts, select the View or change existing directories or address books option and click Next. What do you see? Is there anything listed with Type = LDAP? If you didn’t put it there, try removing that service.

Thanks, I checked it out, but there’s nothing there but my (pop/smtp) email account. Any other ideas?

Did you mean your address book or email account? The first set of options under Tools > Email Accounts is to add or update address books. Then there’s another two options for Address Books, which is where the LDAP account would be.

For Address Books, there should be a MAPI address book like the Outlook address book. At one point, there were default LDAP settings for services like Bigfoot.com. It’s possible one of those is still there.

Thank you so much! I had looked at email accounts and not address books. I eliminated the LDAP listing, leaving the MAPI only and voila, everything works as it should! Thanks again.
