If I have a link to an Excel workbook, is there a way to force IE to just open Excel not open in IE? I have a VBA program that will not run correctly when Excel is in IE but runs fine in just Excel. Is there a way to construct the link to open the file in Excel? Should I post this in the Excel or VBA forums?

I believe after 5.5 they did away with the viewers, You’re using 4+, is this 4.01?

I was using 5.0, and had this problem… upgrading to 5.5 fixed it.. now the file gives me the option to save as.. or open from current location.. which I think is what you’re looking to do…

I’m not exactly sure where the plugins are for this… so i’d recommend upgrading your browser to at least 5.5.. it’ll make things run more smoothly across the board.

      Hope this helps!

        Thanks for the response.

hmmn Perhaps I didn’t explain properly. When you click on a link to an Excel workbook on a web page. The Excel workbook opens inside of IE provided you have Excel on your PC. Unfortunately, when IE and Excel enter into this unholy relationship, VBA programs in the Excel workbook do not behave properly.

What I’d like to do without asking the user to tweak IE, is when a user clicks on a link to the Excel workbook, Excel opens up NOT in IE but normally. They’d still get the run from current location or save it dialog, but Excel would not run within IE.

This is on our intranet. The users run IE4 & IE5 and all minor versions inbetween.

        Does that make any sense?

Yeah Mike, the above post is for that scenario..

I.E. has a series of viewers, or is it MS Office? which allow you to view an office document within I.E. itself. I didn’t like this either, so I set out to fix it.

The simplest solution for me was to upgrade, which I had been meaning to do for quite some time, and go from there. When I upgraded, the problem dissapeared, so I didn’t delve into it further after that.

I’ll do some digging and see what I can find, you’re looking for a method of disabling the office viewers in I.E.

If anyone else knows of a solution before I’m done digging, they’ll post it here..

          Hope that helps!

          Try this:
From Explorer (not IE) – Options | File Types
          Find the xls extension
          Select Advanced
          Deselect ‘Open in Same Window’

I’ve just tried this with W2K and IE5.5 and it seems to work – finding your Explorer folder options may differ depending on your OS.
