I am running Windows 7 64 bit and an HP LaserJet P1505n printer. I am not able to get a owrking IP for the printer. I have run the network config page and the ip address I get is 10.0.1.62. I am not able to connect to the printer to change the IP to fit our scheme and install the network part of the printer. I have tried a cold reset several times and the same thing happens. The network lights are green on the printer itself but I get the message that the printer cannot be found on our network. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the printer is being dynamically assigned an IP address. You would be better off hard-coding one in, so that it always has exactly the same IP address. This makes printing a lot easier, because your printer profile can then always find that printer with that same IP address.

AskWoody LoungerApril 10, 2013 at 4:54 pm #1386709I did as you said. I was able to change the IP address but there still is nothing printing. I am stumped because I can ping the ip and it answers. I can get to the printer via the web and make changes but I can’t install the printer software. I get the message that the printer can’t be found even when I manually add the IP address. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

AskWoody MVPApril 11, 2013 at 11:29 am #1386967You probably know this already, but I would download a fresh copy of the software from HP:
Download both the full program (HP LaserJet Full Feature Software and Driver) and the basic program (HP LaserJet Hostbased Plug and Play Basic Driver).
First, uninstall anything you have already installed, then reboot. Then install the basic program, and see if you can get it working.
If that doesn’t do it, try uninstalling and rebooting, then installing the full program.
If that doesn’t work, you may have your IP settings wrong on the printer. Make sure that your subnet mask and your default gateway match the settings on the computer. Also, the first three numbers of the IP address must match the first three numbers of your computer’s IP address. (Only the 4th number will differ.) To find out how these are set on your computer, open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all . The info will be displayed in the window.

AskWoody MVPApril 11, 2013 at 12:06 pm #1387011You probably need to set up a “local” port for your “network” printer — I know that it doesn’t make sense, but trust me. I’ve done this about a hundred times.
Go to the Devices and Printers window and do the following:
Add a Printer
Add a local printer (I know that sounds counter-intuitive)
Create a new port (choose Standard TCP/IP Port)
Under Hostname or IP Address, put the IP address of the printer.
Under Port name, put a short name with no spaces which describes that printer (e.g. HP1505).
Uncheck the Query the printer box.
When Windows detects the IP address, it will move to the next screen.
On the next screen, pick the most appropriate device type. If you’re not sure, Generic Network Card should be sufficient. Click Next.
Now, either select your printer and hit Next, or click Have Disk.At this point, I will leave it to you. I am on my work PC, and I can’t actually do the install, as I may mess up the setup on my work PC.
