Updated from XP to Win7 Home Premium 32 a few weeks ago. Whatever I tried my wonderful Laserjet 6P would not work so I gave it away and bought a Brother which works very well. The problem is every time I open Devices & Printers it is still there, I delete it but after a reboot there it is again, it is not listed in Device Manager so I cannot delete it from there (I have ‘Show Hidden Devices’ checked) I tried to delete all references to HP and Hewlett Packard from the registry but stuffed the registry and had to do an image restore. I have tried to download the HP uninstaller but could not find it, tells me it comes with the original disc but those went with the printer and probably would not work as the printer is 10+ years old. I am assuming it is the driver still present, not the software so Add/Remove programmes would not help nor Revo Uninstaller. How can I delete this driver?

If you can not permanantly get rid of the HP printer, if you have your Brother printer listed as default at least it should not affect operations. Unfortunately I’m unsure where else besides Devices and Printers would be appropriate to uninstall (delete) the printer, sorry.

Hi Peter,

There is evidently a process or service that is still running on your computer for the HP printer to persist in Devices and Printers. Check Task Manager to view the processes for anything that is identified with HP, and check MSConfig for anything that is identifiable with HP. Check out Services to see if there is an HP service that somehow has remained active. Windows comes with a program called System Information that will provide a great deal of info to help track down items and where they are located. Start it by clicking Start and typing System Information in the Search box and pressing enter.

It might be easier to download Autoruns and Process Explorer to obtain more details on the startup software and processes running on your machine.

I am working from memory here , but I believe Autoruns can show you all drivers that are active on your system as well as their locations. The tabs you would first be interested in are Logon, Services and Drivers. Keep in mind this will only list the items that are running at system startup.

Another program you might find useful is Belarc Advisor . It catalogs about every detail on your computer and creates a report you can read in your browser.

In addition to what Gerald S. said you might want to try CCleaner and or RevoUninstaller and see what they show. Also many times I used Regedit and searched for words that might show up (try HP ) and then deleted any instances that show up. However, this is very risky. Be sure to back-up your registry first.

You could consider using “Guru 3D – Driver Sweeper” to ensure that all traces of the old printer driver has been removed from your pc.

I very much appreciate the effort all you gentleman have made to assist me. Last night I discovered a years old copy of the driver and re-installed it and then deleted from Devices & Printers, Hey Presto, it’s gone and doesn’t return after a reboot. All your comments were interesting and informative but especially the link to ‘Remove old drivers after upgrading to new hardware’ from Clint. Thank you all again and G’Day from Western Australia, although with a socialist, union, female lawyer as Prime Minister I not sure how many more good days we shall be experiencing!
