Hello everyone. My dad has a laptop with both VGA and s-video outputs. He wants to connect the laptop to a television that has both s-video and RCA type connectors. He wants to do this to show a PowerPoint slide show on the TV. I’ve been told that s-video isn’t all that great – it produces a lot of graininess(?). Is it possible to to use a VGA to RCA type of converter or adapter? What would be the best way to accomplish this?

Personally, I have used the s-Video link from my laptop and worked fine, you may just need to adjust the settings.
Here is a Google search for s-video laptop setting.

AskWoody LoungerJune 16, 2008 at 7:55 pm #1112980I think the RCA interface (composite signal) decodes fewer lines of horizontal resolution than S-video. Of course, if the TV’s maximum display quality is RCA/composite, and it converts S-video to that resolution, then both should look the same. Otherwise, the S-video should be marginally better. Why not compare both?

AskWoody LoungerJune 16, 2008 at 8:14 pm #1112983Your information on S-video quality is not accurate. S-video has separate luminance and color signals the net effect of which is higher effective video bandwidth meaning an improved reproduction of the video signal compared to a composite signal (mixed luminance and color or chroma). On the other hand, the quality of its reproduced image is less than component video (where the R, G & B signals are on separate lines). Give the s-video a whirl.
