I have an old laptop of indiscriminate manufacture which has a dead LCD Screen.
This machine has a 12″ screen and somewhere around a 486 or early pentium
cpu. It is old but it belongs to a friend of mine who reported that there is actually
very little time on it because it went dead in about a year of very limited usage.
My friend then threw it in his closet where it remained until last month.
He never checked with the manufacturer about this problem and they are
    now out of business.

My question is I see one of two problems. Either there is no power
to the screen or the video section on the motherboard has no output
to the screen. Does anyone have any ideas? What should I do
next. I can check the power with no problem but have little clue as
to how to check the video output.

Does it have external video capability? If so step 1 may be to connect a monitor and see whether it actually boots. If so you can at least check drivers etc. If the lcd screen is completely dead and your comfortable opening the case you might want to check the cable connection.

Brain, thanx for the insight. never occurred to me to
use an external monitor – will check on it –
I found the odd brand name on it – it is a ZEOS –
        which is no longer made.

Look on the keyboard for “extra” icons. Look for one that looks like a monitor, or maybe two monitors. There is also usually key labeled Fn or similar. Press that along with the key that looks like a monitor(F4 on the newer laptops).

This will toggle between video output going to the LCD, an External monitor or both.

Sometimes the connector to brings signal to the screen gets loose, but unless you want to take it apart, I’d save that investigation for last.

It’s possible too that the fluorescent backlight has gone out.

thank you kc0dxh, wow your name looks like a password – very
unique – great suggestion to check the backlight – will do it –
this is a very likely cause.
