AskWoody LoungerDecember 21, 2009 at 12:03 pm #1193518You are probably already aware of this, but Hybrid Sleep and Hibernation only resume after a brief press of the power button on the computer. So if a key press or mouse movement doesn’t wake the screen, press the power button to wake it. You’ll see an opening screen as if it’s rebooting and a screen that says “Resuming Windows.”

Perhaps your computer is set up that way. Both my computers will wake from Hybrid sleep mode by pressing any key on the keyboard. Moving the mouse used to wake the machines also until I disabled that (too easy to inadvertently wake one up). It all depends on how you set up the power management options in device manager.
You’ll see an opening screen as if it’s rebooting and a screen that says “Resuming Windows.”
My computers wake directly to the desktop.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 27, 2009 at 9:29 am #1194212Hibernation has been a real pain in the pants, since it first showed up years ago. It ranks right up there with Windows ME, as a great MS failure.
Luckily, some folks never have a problem with it, but for those who do, they will never forget it. Personally, Murphy’s Law will get me every time.
So in self defense, I just disable Hibernation on every PC I own, including my Acer Aspire ONE, Netbook.
In XP disabling Hibernate wasn’t all that difficult, but in win-7, that’s a different matter. So to speed up the process of disabling Hibernation, I wrote this simple little batch file.
Rem: this program will disable Hibernation in windows 7.
powercfg -h off
Echo: Check for presence of Hiberfil.sys file in root directory. pause
A welcome side effect of disabling Hibernation, is that the HUGE “Hiberfil.sys” file will disappear from your root directory. Look at it! It’s HUGE!!!
If you’re only going to do this once and you like typing, you can open up a RUN box, or CMD window and type in the powercfg -h off command. Press ENTER and the job is done and you’ll have regained a HUGE chunk of HD space.
Just a thought!

AskWoody LoungerDecember 27, 2009 at 8:18 pm #1194309No, it’s not just my Dell computer. It’s on many computers, but not all. Look up Hibernation in Windows help. You’ll find this:
“How can I wake my computer from sleep or hibernation?
On most computers, you can resume working by pressing your computer’s power button. However, not all computers are the same. You might be able to wake your computer by pressing any key on the keyboard, clicking a mouse button, or opening the lid on a laptop. Check the documentation that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer’s website.”Regular sleep will wake with a key press, but if your computer is in Hybrid Sleep or Hibernation, a press of the power button will wake it. If it goes right to the Desktop with a key press, it might not be in Hibernation, just regular sleep or standby. Check with your manufacturer’s web site. Maybe they have a solution. Hibernation is very handy when you have a laptop. It saves on battery life.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 8, 2010 at 10:31 am #1196650Thanks, Dr Who, you had the right solution for me. My Windows 7 laptop totally froze when left unattended, and would not come back to life, no matter what key I pressed. Dr Who said I should turn off hibernation. I tried to use his script as administrator in cmd mode, but I kept getting an error message so I went to the help menu (suggested by someone else) and followed the directions on how to turn off hibernate (not easy in Windows 7) and now it works great, so thanks Dr Who and the rest of you who replied to my plea for help.
