AskWoody PlusMarch 4, 2019 at 7:36 am #336854A couple of issues with the March 4 edition of the newsletter:
– last two articles (best utilities, best practices) were not in my email; it ended with Patch Watch.
– while logged in to the askwoody website, and as a plus member, I expected to be able to be able to see the day’s column; however, when I click on a “see the full post” link, nothing happens, and I am still on the page asking me to go to Patreon.
Getting-started glitches, or should I be doing something different? Thanks. G

AskWoody LoungerMarch 4, 2019 at 8:17 am #336909Langa’s column suggests using “winver” to get the current version of Windows.
There’s a better way: Press Win, type “About”, press enter.
First — for people like me who need their text a bit bigger, the About screen is easier to read.
Second — The install date, CPU, RAM, OS bit-ness, touch & pen details are all shown.
Third — and this is just conjecture, but I believe “winver” will go away someday to save disk space. 64-bit versions of Windows ship with two copies of winver, totalling 120kb. It’s not necessary.

AskWoody PlusMarch 12, 2019 at 7:05 am #340488A recent “AskWoody Alert” article “A Task Manager Issue Reveals a Deeper Problem with Windows 10” motivated me to see where I stood. What follows is my story. I hope this can help someone.
My wife’s PC had been updated to 1809, while I was still stuck on 1803. I was unaware of this until I ran WINVER as suggested. In the back of my mind I knew I had an update that hung up on reboot. A press or two of the reset button rolled everything back and I was “good as new.” I followed the link to the “Windows 10 Download Site” and attempted to update by clicking the Update Now Button. As before, this failed beautifully. I then tried the next option which was to burn a DVD with the update. This also failed and I had to press reset once or twice yet again. However, this time I got an error message window directing me to a page to help me troubleshoot (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10587/windows-10-get-help-with-upgrade-installation-errors). It also gave me an error code of 0xc1900101-0x40017. Following the advice on their troubleshooting guide I did three things.
1. I deactivated StarDock’s Start10 (Windows start menu replacement).
2. I used msconfig to disable all non-Microsoft services at boot up.
3. Unplug one of my two monitors, and my speakers. In other words, unplug all external devices.
Once again I attempted to update with the files I downloaded when clicking the Update Now Button. Yes! With a few more passes of the Windows Update in Settings, I am now up to date. I don’t know which of the three things I listed did the trick since I did them at one time instead of separately, however, it was definitely one of three.2 users thanked author for this post.
