This old software has been running reliably for me on my W10 22H2 desktop for more than ten years with no changes, updates, or problems. A week or so ago, it decided to not autostart on boot anymore, as well as not displaying my scheduled reminders anymore, even if I manually run the .exe file. Old reminders with rescheduled date/times and new reminders alike just don’t work.

There’s no longer any support, the website’s gone, and maybe I should just quit, but I thought that somebody, somewhere, might be having the same problem.

    Anybody?

Does a week or so ago align with the March security updates?

Dcom enforcement for security issues occurred with the March updates.

I’d have to say yes, Susan. I’m attaching a screenshot of my most recent update installation dates for your perusal.Recent-W10-updates

As  a test go down to the uninstall updates section and remove the March update.  See if your tool comes back.  If it does, it definitely has issues with the Dcom hardening that just got implemented in March and the only way to fix this is to “contact the vendor for an update”.  If the application isn’t supported anymore decide if this application is important enough for you from this point forward to block all updates (and risk security issues).

Thanks for the guidance, Susan. It seems to be a case of damned if I do and damned if I don’t. The application is no longer supported, and to make it work I’d have to do without the W10 updates.

Hmmmm…I’ll give it some thought…deeeep thought…in the meantime, is there a relatively uncomplicated task management software that you might recommend?

What do you use the program for?  What tasks do you set on your computer – as many can be done in the task scheduler in the OS (if I’m reading what this software does)

My main use of my Kirby Alarm app is in creating Post-It-sized popup messages on my W10 desktop or my W10 laptop to remind me to do something. The messages allow choice of background color and text font, color, and size. The pop-up can be scheduled to appear on any day/date and to reappear by subsequent minute/hour/days/weeks/months.

I schedule popups for birthdays, anniversaries, sports events, appointments, bill payments, reminders of all kinds, inspirationals (“If you have something to do today, you should have done it yesterday; today and tomorrow are not guaranteed.”), 20-20-20s, and so on.

A feature I used a lot is to have a popup scheduled for, say, 8am every day or three times a week or every Tuesday and Thursday, or whatever, which I want to have reappear again that same day. When the original 8am appears, I’d specify a delay in minutes, hours, or days before I want it to popup again, and do this any number of times during that day without affecting the original daily/weekly/monthly end-of-month/annual 8am popup.

The app could also display a web site instead of the popup, and it would do other neat stuff, like play a music file or a sound effect with the message to call attention to it.

Whew! I don’t mean to overload you here, but, after all, you did ask ;-)…

PS: The laptop hasn’t had the March updates yet, so Kirby should still run there…stay tuned…

Don’t know if this will help but it might confirm if that app is definitely impacted by the dcom hardening.
