Keying text very very sluggish, pop-up windows/menus blank

For several days I’ve been battling these problems:

[*]Keying text (such as emails):
– Very sluggish, can be 15 to 60 seconds from hitting key to displaying on monitor. However, if I click the scroll bar on the right, the text is immediately displayed.
[*]Highlighting text
– The text itself is hidden by the highlighting colour
[*]Pop-up windows and menus
– The window is just an empty box, sometimes transparent. Sometimes switching to another window and back can correct this, but not often enough!
[*]Hover over an icon shows wrong text
– Typically in the Task Bar, hover over an icon displays correct name, but move to any other icon still displays same name.
[*]Show hidden icons
– clicking this just displays an empty box (like 3 above)

Generally all is OK for a while after a Restart.

Task Manager during the troubles typically shows:
CPU: 1-2% [Intel Core i7 4GHz]
Memory: 10-15% [32Gb]
Disks: 0% [2 x SSD, 2 x HD]

Windows 10 Pro, all updates current

Do you have System Restore turned on? If so, have you tried restoring to a time when it was working correctly?

Have you run an SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated command prompt?

Yes, System restore is turned on and I could go back to the 14th but the system has been perfectly OK since the last Restore (on 23rd just before starting this thread) so I’ll wait until the problem returns.

I’ve run SFC /SCANNOW and “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”.
