Yet another excellent article from Gregg Keizer (see the entry below). He make an excellent point — that the new 30-month lifetimes for “09” or “H2”

AskWoody PlusSeptember 20, 2018 at 10:02 am #218538This is why (as I have probably said before) I am sticking with my 6 year old PC and 7 year old laptop, which really ought to be replaced, because they run Win7. The idea of Win10 appals me, under the current circumstances.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 20, 2018 at 11:43 am #218546Why not have all versions of W10 on the same cadence? All MS is doing is having a multiplicity of versions in support at the same time. One of the explicit goals was to reduce the number of versions in support.

AskWoody_MVPSeptember 20, 2018 at 12:24 pm #218554This is a dangerous game. If SMBs move to Google or something else, do they think they will really need or want to go to Microsoft when they get a bit bigger?
Will they try to sell their managed desktop service to SMBs with no internal IT support after making their experience miserable with Windows Pro? I bet this won’t go much better than their current strategy.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 20, 2018 at 6:49 pm #218647My family uses various Linux distros as their primary OS with W7 available on a box for a couple of rarely used applications that only run on Windows. Not everyone in the household is a techie. In fact it is the non-techies who promote Linux more.
Your point about being familiar with other alternatives no matter the initial reason is dangerous for MS. The original strategy was based on having a very strong Windows ecosystem that users would want a Windows box. Cloud based applications only require a reliable browser (plenty to choose from) and the OS is mainly irrelevant. Also, many do have a need for specialized software that only has a Windows version available. Here the reason for not moving is mostly no compelling need at the moment coupled with inertia. Antagonize them enough and they will start looking at options.
When I can walk into Best Buys and see Chromebooks, Macs, and Windows boxes prominently displayed I would say MS needs to wake up and smell the roses.

AskWoody PlusSeptember 20, 2018 at 12:49 pm #218556An excellent article by Keizer & describing the Patch Lady’s concerns. Keizer also linked to another article quoting Stephen Kleynhans of Gartner. https://www.computerworld.com/article/3276278/microsoft-windows/windows-10-pro-is-a-dead-end-for-the-enterprise-gartner-says.html
Welp… there’s no need for me to upgrade to Win10 Pro now! Stuck in the same 18-month upgrade h***hole. Again, unless Windows 10 does an amazing turnaround with support, my research starts January 2019 between Apple Mac & Linux distros. Even though I’m kinda shackled to my Android phone & use Google Assistant more & more (Cortana who?!), I don’t want to commit to Chromebook. I’ve installed Firefox on my laptop & phone, & recently synced them with a Firefox account. Next step is to uninstall Chrome from my phone & save some storage.
Bought a refurbished Windows 10 64-bit, currently updated to 22H2. Have broke the AC adapter cord going to the 8.1 machine, but before that, coaxed it into charging. Need to buy new adapter if wish to continue using it.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 20, 2018 at 6:55 pm #218649Linux distros for your consideration I would recommend Linux Mint, Xubuntu, or Ubuntu. They are closely related. Though popular, I would stay away from Manjaro and other Arch based distros unless you want to learn Linux the hard way. The biggest pitfall I see for many is the forget that MacOS and Linux are not Windows so they do not work exactly like Windows.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/search?alpha=Windows%2010those using Education or Enterprise editions of Win10 get additional 12 months of support after the Home and Professional editions of Win10 go EOL. for example support for Win10 v1703 Home & Pro editions end on Oct. 9, 2018 while support for Win10 v1703 Education & Enterprise editions end on Oct. 8, 2019.
