KB953297 in a loop

I’ve seen over 20 Windows XP PCs (all SP3) that cannot install KB953297 thru WindowsUpdate (or MicrosoftUpdate). They all exhibit the same symptoms: the yellow WU shield is present in the taskbar — clicking it shows KB953297 is ready to install. When install is approved, update runs for a while, then you get “Some Updates were not installed” error. Restarting PC results in same.
I assume (not yet tried) that using the .NET removal tool and reinstalling all .NET components thru WindowsUpdate will fix the problem, but is this time-consuming solution the only fix?

Have you checked the prerequisites at MS09-061: Description of the security update for the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1: October 13, 2009?

Have you ckecked the know issues?

Have you check the update log to see what the error is?

Have you tried downloading the fix and installing it separately? Download details: .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 CLR Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server x64/IA64 and Windows 2003 Server R2 x64/IA64

If you’ve tried all the above then unfortunately your .NET installations are most likely muddled enough that using the uninstall tool is the only way.
