On Jan 10 2025, my Win10 Pro 22H2 systems (plural) received notify from Windows Update that KB5048239 available to download and install. The appearance of this seems suspicious given the date and also that KB5048239 was successfully installed back in November 2024.

I hid this update to get it off the notifies. Searching online shows many others having the same issue. I have lost all patience with Microsoft on this and refuse to spend time chasing around.

And yes, KB5048239 installed successfully in November, my WinRE is enabled, my WinRE partition is 2GB, the WinRE version is 5125, etc, etc, etc.

Not looking for suggestions – only posting this for awareness.

Microsoft – get your act together.

Thanks for posting. I didn’t notice the date at first, since I usually just click to install window updates. So when it kept not installing, I started thinking something was wrong with my computer, and tried to find solutions. Then I noticed the date and thought it might be an update I already installed. But I wasn’t sure, and even if it was, I thought maybe the problem was still my end, that it was a problem with my computer that meant it thought it wasn’t installed when it was. So thanks again for posting, now I know it is a problem on Microsoft’s end, not mine. Also in future I’m going to keep an eye on the dates of Window updates. 😛

This happened to me as well.

On Jan 11 both the WinRE (KB5048239) and the normal defender updates were displayed by Windows Update. I didn’t notice that the extra update was for WinRE, expecting it was another Windows Defender Platform update, I hit the download button.

Update KB5048239 was successfully installed back on Dec 24 (and now again on Jan 11).

This morning, Jan 12, the same thing happened. So I hid KB5048239 and just installed the defender update.

Then to clear the Windows Update queue, I used the pause/resume sequence. That works great.

FWIW – there is a thread on a Microsoft forum where many users have posted having a repeating Windows Update for KB5048239 that began a few days ago and continues. People that install seem to get caught in a loop of “install again”.

      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/re-2024-11-security-update-for-windows-10-version/a6123462-2dbd-4abd-ba44-adf828dd0dff

There is a “I have the same question” that you can click on (count currently up to 112). May be worthwhile to click on “I have the same question” to see if it gets Microsoft’s attention (I wonder what gets Microsoft’s attention these days).

In the meantime, especially if the KB5048239 has been already successfully installed back with the November updates, the best choice is to hide this until Microsoft fixes whatever they did to cause the repeating install loop.

I just bumped “I have the same question” to 201. Apparently an endless loop:  I watched it download and install successfully twice in a row on a Win10 22H2 machine with the WinRE already at build 5125, which according to the KB article means it will not be offered.

Just bumped it up to 296

I see Microsoft greyed out the Repeat question button at 326. Funny that.

I also received this update, and it indeed needed a RETRY and it installed. So the one in November that was installed is now gone and replaced with this one indeed stating 11-2024 and installed again with the December updates.

I wonder if it has some secret sauce that Microsoft wants you to have? Hmmm…

      Thoughts?

That recently offered Windows 10 kb5048239 patch via WU drops a re-install loop on some systems.
If you encounter kb5048239 re-appearing on WU after installation on Windows 10, fear not..

The offer to my PC went into one retry loop and then installed.

The question is why would it install again if it is already there in the first place for an update from 11-2024?

It negated what was previously installed and dated the installation as current.

One of the workaround suggested was to delete the WinRE partition

..Another option would be to entirely delete the recovery partition itself as Microsoft notes that WinRE updates won’t be downloaded in that case:..

      Hi castiel:

I’m not advocating that anyone install the January 2025 Patch Tuesday updates before Susan Bradley has given the all-clear, but there are now multiple users posting in the MS Answers topic 2024-11 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5048239) that the repeated installs of KB5048239 have stopped on their Win 10 machine since they installed their Patch Tuesday updates today on 14-Jan-2025.

I assume KB5050411 (Windows Recovery Environment Update for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2: January 14, 2025) that updates the WinRE version to 10.0.19041.5363 fixes the problem.

There is an update now KB5050411 that replaces KB5048239. Problem looks solved now. KB 5050411 is part of the regular monthly Windows update cycle, rolled out today.

Glad that the KB5048239 problem is going away with KB5050411 replacing it.

Should we take bets whether this is the last time we have to deal with WinRE updating problems in Windows 10 ???

Just housekeeping to close as RESOLVED.

KB5050411 in January 2025 patches replaced the problematic KB5048239 as noted in posts above.

For me, KB5050411 installed successfully and now done with WinRE (until next time MS deems more fixing needed ??? – chuckle).
