Win 10 Pro 22H2 … This a.m. I had a popup for KB5042320 (ie) This update replaces the previously released update KB5034441. A lot of identical stipulations in the description so I’ll leave it to admin and/or forum experts to confirm IF the Same decisions with KB5034441 should be applied here….. No Bitlocker so I’ve hidden mine.

Well… sadly KB5042320 still fails with Error 0x80070643….

I don’t see how these can be viable replacements when it states at the top that…

IMPORTANT This update will not be offered if your Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) meets any of the following conditions:

If the WinRE recovery partition does not have sufficient free space, see the NOTE in the “Summary” section. The note provides instructions about how to increase the available free space in the WinRE recovery partition.

      and

      Prerequisites

The PC must have 250 MB of free space in the recovery partition to apply this update successfully.

The underlying root cause for failure is still not fixed.

I tried to download it.. error 0x80070643

Can I still hide it eventhough I tried to download it?

        • #2706533

If you didn’t download it, you can still hide it if it shows in the Windows Update queue.

Thanks. With a download error of 0x80070643…it didn’t actually fully download but if there are any components of it in the software distribution folder… can It interfere with our ability to hide it?

fortunately for me, I’m not offered the KB5042320 update on any of my Win10 PCs as they already have the “WinREVersion” registry entry set to at least “10.0.19041.3920”.

rather than “hiding” the KB5042320 update with wushowhide.diagcab, inputting/setting the “WinREVersion” registry value at “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion” in RegEdit to at least “10.0.19041.3920” is a far better solution

Hidden previous update, and now I have to hide this one too as it fails in the same way as before. I have to repeat that on all of my clients machines, useless work due to MS stupidity.

Microsoft has assured us that the replacement won’t be presented to PCs without 256MB of free space in WinRE…:

IMPORTANT This update will not be offered if your Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) meets any of the following conditions:

If the WinRE recovery partition does not have sufficient free space, see the NOTE in the “Summary” section. The note provides instructions about how to increase the available free space in the WinRE recovery partition.

If the WinRE recovery partition was manually updated by using the procedure in Add an update package to Windows RE and is already up to date.

If the WinRE image has a version greater than or equal to version 10.0.22000.2710. To determine the version of your WinRE image, check the WinREVersion registry value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion.

If your running PC does not have a WinRE recovery partition. To verify if you have WinRE enabled, run the following command in an elevated command prompt: reagentc /info. If WinRE is enabled, you will see Windows RE status in the output with a value of Enabled. In this scenario, this update might be needed…

WU offered KB5042320 update the other day and I hid it with wushowhide. I use a local account with Win10 22H2 and do not use Bitlocker.

Even if the recovery partition has sufficient free space is there any compelling reason to permit this update to be installed?

    • #2698402

Same situation here as EricB, “I use a local account with Win10 22H2 and do not use Bitlocker”, and the same question, “is there any compelling reason to permit this update [KB5042320] to be installed?”

      • #2701019

This issue turned out to be moot for me. KB5042320 was not offered as an August update yesterday.

Microsoft has promised not to send KB5042320 to to PCs without 256MB of free space in WinRE…

Can confirm this new update does NOT work. I even manually resized my recovery partition using these instructions:

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf

and the update still fails on 0x80070643

According to disk manager my recovery partition is 1.21GB of free space. Update says it needs 250MB. Any idea how to fix this?

    • #2703736

According to disk manager my recovery partition is 1.21GB

      Which recovery partition ?

This is an update to WinRE partition.

    • #2703740

Partition 4 on my computer is the WinRE recovery partition. That is the one I resized to add 250MB and it says it is currently 1.21GB.

I checked the registry because “After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should greater than or equal to version 10.0.19041.3920”

      The registry says 10.0.19041.1

        Run Minitool Partition Wizard free.

        Select the WinRE partition.
        Select Explore partition
        Check the size of WinRE.wim
