I don’t see a Windows Server forum here? Posting in the equivalent Win11 forum.

Just a heads up for server admins:  KB5041054 apparently cannot be uninstalled from Repair mode if it fails, which it did for me on one machine (Server 2022 21H2). Be prepared to do a full disaster recovery restore if the patch does not install. Blogged here:

Let me review the categories.  Did you try a dism at the command line?  Or a mere reboot?

Thanks for moving this post. I had missed this category.

Several reboots always landed me in Repair mode. Opened command prompt. Tried the recommended DISM /online /get-packages, but /online that doesn’t work from Windows PE. I got the package ID from another server that had successfully applied the patch, tried it with dism /remove-package and got “The remove-package option is unknown.”

      Hence my deductions:

      1. Per Microsoft, only dism /remove-package can uninstall the CU.
      2. remove-package isn’t available in Windows PE.
      3. So you can’t use Repair mode to remove this patch if it fails.
      4. Break out the bare-metal restore.

There are a couple screen shots in my blog post.

If there is a way to remove a patch like this in Repair mode, I’d like to learn how!
