Hello. I am on a machine that has a 500mb recovery partition and will probably fail the KB5034441 update. As I don’t want to and am probably unable to change the disk partitions I will probably have to resort to the wushowhide tool to stop this update from installing. I may be in a bit of a bind however as updates are set to paused as I am on W10 pro.

As far as I understand it the tool will not work when updates are paused and if that is the case what on earth do I do? The moment I start updating windows update will start downloading all patches automatically…

Since you are using the Pro version, you have settings to control Windows Update download. Group Policy is is found by typing gpedit, msc in the search bat and hitting Enter. Group Policy Editor is a nested tree structure like Explorer. See screenshot below). The settings will allow the updates to appear in the Windows Update queue but they won’t download until you click the “Download” button. Once Windows Update is able to scan for updates, run wushowhide and hide the updates you don’t want. The next time WU scans, the hidden updates will not show in Windows Update, only the updates you did not hide.

These Settings are found in Group Policy (gpedit.msc) in Win10 Pro at this location:
      Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components

      Under Windows Update:
Set Configure Automatic Updates to Enabled
Set Configure automatic updating to “2” (Notify for download and auto install)

Oh that looks handy. Thank you very much. This finally gives me a degree of control. Btw, can these settings be used to stop windows from looking for updates for a while as well?

        • #2625093

No. Windows Update will search for updates, but they will remain in the queue (not download) until you click on “Download” (NOT “Check for updates”). What you see in the queue is what will download. So when you HIDE updates with wushowhide, you have to wait till Windows Update rescans and the “bad” updates disappear from the queue before you download.

Sections 3-5 of AKB2000016 may help you understand how this works (ignore about deferral).
AKB2000013 discusses clearing the WU queue. Read the top part to explain the issue, then scroll down and use @Matador ‘s method starting here. It is the best way to clear the queue.

          • #2626410

Btw, how do I make Windows rescan for updates? Just “click check for updates again” after a reboot?

            • #2627076

Never click “Check for Updates.” That will cause an immediate download/install of any available update(s), even if you have the “2” set in Group Policy.

The trick is @Matador ‘s method. If you have the 2 (notify download/install) set in Group Policy, so the updates don’t download until you click the “Download” button, first you HIDE the updates with wushowhide, then you click Pause followed by clicking Resume. This will cause Windows to search for updates, but the updates you have hidden will not be in the resulting queue. (It’s kinda scary the first time b/c you are probably expecting the update to begin instead of just refreshing the queue. It’s the “2” that makes the difference).

Is it an option to just run the windows updater normally and hide the update after it fails to install?

            • #2627107

As you should not be patching yet, I’d wait another week or two before doing any updates.
If you must update, you can hide the troublesome patch if it fails, or just ignore it until your next patch attempt.

              cheers, Paul

I can wait until the 11th but then the dam will burst…

        Hi

I have a similar problem although still have KB5034441 in Wushohide but now have a problem with optional update KB5040525. I ran Wushohide but it couldn’t find KB5040525 that is there in my updates page. My question is is do i have to start to download the update before & then whilst its downloading start wushohide and then hopefully it finds it?

        Regards

        Gaz

        • #2693650

KB5040525 has been issued multiple times (different versions of it). Look in your hidden updates and see if it is already hidden.

If you initiate downloads, everything that you see in the Windows Update queue in the Settings App will download and install.
I suggest you download WUMgr to control updates in the future. Instructions and a download link are in AKB6000002. It works the same for both Win10 and Win11.

          • #2694116

Yes if i initiate the download of the update but Wushohide doesn’t see that update when i run ‘Hide Updates’ . Herehttps://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/resolved-issues-windows-10-22h2#3281msgdesc , a third down the page it says it has been resolved? should i download now the update please?

    • #2625528

btw even when/if it does start downloading that update, it just fails to install. It doesn’t hurt anything.

ApparentlyKB5040525 disables usb ports so then can’t uninstall the update manually via Control panel in UK. As i said Wushohide can’t see it. I just need to know if safe to download. Sorry i’m in panic mode

        • #2694128

KB5040525 is a preview update and I don’t recommend installing previews.

That said I am not tracking that patches disable USB ports – at least not intentionally.  Beware of posts on social media that may erroneously equate a few posters with massive issues.

            Hello Susan & thanks.

How can i delete the KB5040525 from my Windows download page if Wushohide can’t detect it being there? As said do i have to start the download & then initiate Wushohide for it to detect it? Maybe i recall having to do this with KB5034441?

            Regards

Can you then locate and Delete the unintended Download? – or what happens to it if No?

You can then launch the tool and hide it.

Thank you bot very much. I have some reading to do!

    • #2627153

Can you then locate and Delete the unintended Download?

Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\download and delete all files.
      Run wushowhide.diagcab / WUmgr and hide KB5034441

I hid KB5034441, using wushowhide and installed the cumulative updates for win 10 22H2 and .net framework, without any issues. I’m now at 19045.3930.

I know I was supposed to wait but I was curious about any ill effects. If there were issues, I had a backup to revert to.

        Peace, CAS

i’m not confident to go into registry comand prompt etc.. Again the Wushohide does it only see the dodgy upload once it’s uploaded. I tried to download KB5040525 & launch Wushohide & nothing happened.. It didn’t see it.. I’m  just wanting to know if it’safe to down load in the UK?. Thanks

            Regards

            Gary

            • #2694963

Preview updates are not recommended to download any time, fixed or not.

            • #2695069

Yes i want to delete it off the update page. I haven’t a clue what i have to do here?

            • #2695372

The way to remove it from the Windows Update queue requires the use of an Elevated Command Prompt.
In the Taskbar search bar type cmd and hit Enter.
In the results, at the top, right-click on  cmd.exe and choose “Run as Administrator.”
In the Command Prompt that opens, copy/paste each of the following lines one at a time followed by Enter after each one:

              net stop wuauserv
              net stop cryptSvc
              net stop bits
              net stop msiserver
              Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
              net start wuauserv
              net start cryptSvc
              net start bits
              net start msiserver

              Type Exit and press Enter
              Restart your computer.

@PKCano though perhaps not applicable to the above cases; does your Ask Woody knowledgebase AKB200013 no longer apply for rest of us?  200013 Clear the Queue? TY

      • #2695296

Scroll down in AKB2000013 and use the method used by @Matador – it is easier. The original method I posted was long ago when it was first needed to clear the queue.

Realize, you need to use @Matador ‘s method when you are ready to update, because it initiates download/install. It initiates a new search by Windows Update (which clears the queue. And it will respect the updates you have hidden with wushowhide and not include them.

I use that method (pause/resume) after unhiding my monthly updates, yet didn’t know it would also ‘clear the queue’ if I were to ever err and unhid wrong kb! Good to know I can re-hide and then use same method to clear:)
