Had something extremely weird happen on my Windows 10 22H2 PC this morning!

Got a “You need some updates” notification when I booted up and, when I checked Windows Update, it indicated the update I needed was KB5034122???

However, “View update history” indicated KB5034122 had been successfully installed on 01/17/24 and Winver showed Windows 10 22H2 (OS Build 19045.3930) which is the correct build number for the Jan KB5034122 CU?!?!

Anyway, I clicked “Install now” fully expecting the update to fail because it was already installed and, much to my surprise, it installed successfully (without requiring a restart) and showed up in “View update history” as Security Update for Windows (KB5034122).

    KB5034122-Double-Install

So my system now shows two different KB5034122’s as successfully installed.

    HUH?!?!?!

Did Microsoft actually issue a Security Update using the same KB# as the Cumulative Update?

I checked the Microsoft Update Catalog and it doesn’t show a KB5034122 Security Update but, since it also doesn’t show the KB5034441 Security Update, that may not mean anything.

    Anyone else experience this?

THe MS Catalog still shows KB5034122 last update 1/9/2024. Interesting.

Maybe Microsoft fixed “Sysprep might fail after installing updates”

Haven’t used Sysprep on any of my PC’s for many years (last time was way back in 2019 when I moved Windows 7 Pro “retail” from my old Desktop to my new one!)

Also, even if it was a fix for Sysprep, why would they use the exact same KB# as the Jan Cumulative Update?

      Hi n0ads:

This sounds similar to the KB5033734 (MS .NET Runtime v7.0.15) update that Alex5723 was prompted to reinstall on 03-Feb-2023 by their Acronis Cyber Protect software after it was initially installed on 09-Jan-2024.  See Alex5723’s 03-Feb-2024 topic .NET 7.0 vulnerabilities’.

I can understand that, for some strange reason, Windows (i.e. Microsoft) might have thought I needed to reinstall the Jan CU (KB5034122) even though it successfully installed back on 01/17/24.

What gets me is, after doing so, why does Windows now show a separate Security Update with the same KB# instead of simply a new install of the original KB?!?!?!

Seems pretty obvious that, whatever it did, it didn’t replace the original KB5034122.

BTW, I haven’t “noticed” any changes to my OS since it was installed, so haven’t the faintest idea of exactly what it changed/updated?
