After a period of travelling, I am dealing with updates for my HP Desktop, Windows 10 Home, v. 21H2.  I use WuMgr to control updates.

Yesterday, the current Malicious Software Removal tool installed successfully.

The only other update offered was KB5033052. No Security Updates.

Am I correct in assuming that the servicing stack package need to be installed before the normal updates will show up?

And are there any issues to watch out for?

    Many thanks

Win10 21H2 is out of support. There is no harm installing the Servicing Stack, but you will not rreceive Monthly CU Security Updates. You need to upgrade to Win10 22H2. Check any Feature Update blockers you have used (Registry settings, GRC’s InControl, Feature Update hidden in WUMgr, etc.) and unblock the upgrade.

Well, of course that was the problem!  Many thanks for the explanation. I look after 2 machines. Both now successfully updated to 22H2.

One of the aspects of Ask Woody that I appreciate is the patience shown by all who reply to questions and help sort out problems. Even if …. especially if…. as in this case, the issue was pretty basic.

        Thank you again

Any servicing stack updates would be installed as part of the upgrade. Generally, the servicing stack updates are pretty innocuous. They are performed first behind the scenes when an upgrade or cumulative update is performed.

When Feature Update (21H2 in this case) is EOS, the User may still get the SSU alone, but will not get any Security Updates (CUs).

      Are these updates really necessary? KB5033052, KB5034685, KB4023057, KB5001715

It seems my system bogs down the more updates I receive, it keeps reinstalling window apps I’ve removed and it acts like I have no choice to choose what updates or apps I want on my pc. I get the feeling that MS wants to completely control and keep track of what we do on “OUR paid for by us PC’s.”

An update came in and delete my Office Pro, completely wiped it from my pc without my consent just because I bought it from a 3rd party. And yes, it was a legit download I paid over $300 for if I remember correctly. All my work went with it.

Do I really need these so called security downloads when I am using Bitdefender? I have MS security turned off anyways.

Again, after each download it effects my entire pc speed, settings and reinstalls their apps.

How can I remove Edge and keep it off? I don’t play games so why I can I not remove gamebar and Cortana? Why does MS prohibit the removal of these apps? Why does MS not allow me to chose which downloads to install?

Help, I’m ready to run to Linux.

      Thank you in Advance!! SimonG

This is just Windows as you give it more work to do. A clean install fixes it, but mostly it’s down to your perception of what to expect. An SSD and plenty of RAM is always the best remedy.

delete my Office Pro… All my work went with it

Your work will not have been deleted unless you had saved the data in a very odd location. You should always store your work in “Documents” and then back up “Documents” at a minimum – you should perform an image backup regularly.

Do I really need these so called security downloads

Yes. These fix holes in Windows itself that no AV can defend against.

How can I remove Edge and keep it off?

Why? Don’t use it if you don’t like it.
I don’t use Edge as my browser but it is handy sometimes when things just don’t work in my regular browser. Having more than one browser is a good idea.

      cheers, Paul

The point is, if I don’t want a program and choose to uninstall it, do not forcefully reinstall it. You know what else does that? Malware. The service stack also changes user’s specific settings to block unwanted “enhancements”. And of course, they are permanent.

Consider – if MS goes to the added effort of changing user settings without permission AND adds a separate update further circumventing user’s config to make very sure that they can reinstall their browser/features/telemetry at will, then it means they are absolutely aware that the customer does not want that software and has gone to extraordinary lengths to get rid of it.

The fact that even further escalations by MS to add it back, not just without consent, but after specifically having it removed, then further introducing code that removes the user’s ability to control their system is the exact move we’d expect as a mega-villain trope in a bad movie. You know, the kind of privacy-circumventing, backdoor installing, mass surveillance police state fascist dystopia we all roll our eyes at? Whelp, surprise!

      Disable Windows store updates.

      Will not install: See attachment

Cannot find the update in the Microsoft Update Catalog. What to do?
