    January 17, 2023, update for Office 2013, Office 2010, and Office 2007 (KB5021751)

This update is intended to help Microsoft identify the number of users running out-of-support (or soon to be out-of-support) versions of Office, including Office 2013, Office 2010, and Office 2007. This update will run one time silently without installing anything on the user’s device…

Except for KB5021751, of course. Does it then uninstall itself after phoning home?

I note that the quote is under a Improvements and fixes heading. I see neither.

If you upgrade your Office 2010 to Office 2013 Microsoft wants to know so as to send you some ads about Microsoft 365…

I suspect that most PCs using these older versions of Office will be on Windows 8, 7, Vista, or XP. Will Microsoft make an exception to its “no more updates” policy to encompass these OSes? If they don’t, they can’t possibly get anywhere near a reliable count of the number of users running these versions of Office.

      • #2525249

My Uncle still uses his licensed “multi-user” Office 2003 on three of his Win10 22H2 PC’s and I “suspect” there are plenty of other users out there like him who upgraded their PC’s from Win7/8 to Win10 that are still using older Office versions that were on their system when they did that.

So, for all the people who don’t send metrics to MS, they are implementing a backdoor via Windows Update?  Sounds about right.

I know that several XP are running Office 2003. They still work well. Plus many more Windows 98 running Office 97.

Telemetry are spyware. MS start to use them after hiring black hat hackers.

      • #2525461

They were using telemetry and feedback mechanisms for years.  They hire white hats to test and secure the software.  They don’t hire known attackers. Pentesting is something all large firms do as a regular process.  It does not mean that these businesses hire “BlackHats”.

It’s fascinating to me that clearly they do NOT already have this info.  You would think they would.

If it no longer charges for the OS, how else does it maintain a decent revenue stream?

Office users are now all fair game…

Beeping computer article about this update.

Microsoft pushes KB5021751 to check for outdated Office installs

I found this quote from their article very interesting.

Microsoft recommends users of outdated Office versions download and install a free trial of its Microsoft 365 productivity and security apps suite.

I’m willing to bet MS will use the info they gather to “push” notifications to users of older Office versions telling them they need to update to Microsoft 365.

BTW, the “installed” version of Office on my PC is MS Office 97 Pro so I’ve never actually been offered any Office updates!

Shame I can’t give you two thanks… one for the info and one for admitting to still using Office 97 Pro, probably the last version of Microsoft Office that did everything I wanted (including no ribbon) and *nothing* more. 🙂

probably the last version of Microsoft Office that did everything I wanted (including no ribbon) and *nothing* more. 🙂

Exactly why I’ve never bothered to upgrade to a newer version… that and the fact I was able to buy it at an “educational discount” from the college’s student store for $129  vs the “full retail” $499 price!

      They can try… 🙂

Had it pop up in my list of available downloads yesterday morning and, after finding the quote @Alex5723 mentioned when looking for what it was for, immediately hid it on both my PC’s and my Uncle’s 6 PC’s!

I see absolutely no reason to allow MS to “snoop” even more about how I use my PC than they already do with the security only level of telemetry I’ve allowed them.

What OS’s and was it pushed or offered?

What OS’s and was it pushed or offered?

Win10 Pro 22H2 and it showed up as a regular Windows update (i.e. pushed) not an optional update so, if I didn’t have “automatic updates” disabled, Windows would have immediately downloaded and ran it.

          Also, since the description states…

This update will run one time silently without installing anything on the user’s device

…I “assume” that, like other run once updates that don’t install anything, it doesn’t get recorded in the list of installed updates which means users will never know Microsoft “hijacked” this info from their PC’s.

Just FYI, even though I hid it, it does not show up in my list of hidden updates; which probably means it’ll get offered to me again.

BTW, the “installed” version of Office on my PC is MS Office 97 Pro so I’ve never actually been offered any Office updates!

      Hi everyone,

Thanks for highlighting this update. Is there a means to block this update, please?

I tried the steps (included below) from BleepingComputer but the update is not listed within the updates to hide (only old optional driver updates are listed).

One of my older systems uses Windows 10 22H2 with Office 2010 64 bit installed. Thanks in advance for any advice:

      ============================
Download and run the “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter
      Click on ‘Next’
      Select the KB5021751 update
      Click on ‘Next’
      Restart your device if prompted

I need not have been concerned. I went to install the February 2023 on my system with Office 2010 64 bit installed (all patches for Office 2010 have been installed) and the kb5021751 was not offered during the automatic Windows 10 22H2 updates.

I do have the option of installing other updates checked but I’m just relieved this “update” wasn’t offered. I hope this is useful.

      * Doesn’t Microsoft know which version of Office you have when you run the software ?
If you have Office installed but don’t use it, it shouldn’t concern Microsoft.
I suspect that Microsoft also looks for installed Office compatible software like LibreOffice, OpenOffice…
