Running windows 1703. Win Update is as locked down as it can be with settings, group policies & wushowhide.
Last night I shut down my system before trudging off to the Land of Nod and noticed the shutdown was taking longer than usual. Turns out, Windows was installing an update.
KB4073543 was previously hidden with wushowhide. When I rebooted, the installed updates listing from within the settings –> update –> update history did not show any updates having been installed recently. From the control panel –> programs and features –> view installed updates I could see the KB had just been installed.
I did not ask to install that update. I was not notified that it had been downloaded and a reboot was required for it to be applied. There was no indication on the shutdown option to upadate & shutdown. Nothing, nada. No indication at all that this KB was waiting for its chance to change stuff.
From the control panel, it appeared to be possible to uninstall this KB. I told windows to do so. Windows happily did so, requested a reboot to complete the uninstall and I of course happily gave it permission to do so. No onscreen errors were displayed indicating anything was amiss. Upon restarting, I checked the installed update listing in the control panel and the KB was still listed as having been installed yesterday. It would appear that despite windows thinking it can uninstall this, it really can’t or chooses not to.
KB4073543 was released about 60 days ago. So despite being hidden in wushowhide, despite the OS settings being configured to not automatically install stuff, at least in my case, Windows chose to disregard all of this and do what it wanted anyways giving me no way to undo what has been done.
Apart from the Mar 2018 Cumulative Update, the only other pending install hidden with wushowhide is KB4023057 – Another attempt to muck about with windows update. We are now in “wait & see” mode to determine how much longer Microsoft is prepared to wait for me to install this myself before deciding to ignore me and proceed on its own.
