      Woody,

I just got the same KB 3162593 as an optional update. Because it is a Silverlight update (I don’t have Silverlight on this computer) I sent it to Hidden Updates. I guess it is just another way MS is trying to trick us into installing Windows 10. So far, I refuse to do it ! !

I’m not sure what’s going on with 3162593. Sounds more like a misfire to me, on many fronts.

    • #40282

The ad is on all kb Support Pages, i.e. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2458544, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3079213. I’ll send a screenshot. I use Firefox. Could also reproduce in Chrome. Sent a Chrome-screenshot already.

    • #40283

It might not be on the updatelist (yet), but there is a supportpage: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3162593

    • #40284

Please do send a screenshot. I don’t see an ad in Chrome or Firefox…. oh… wait a sec. I don’t see an ad because I’m using Win10. D’OH. Just tried it from Win7 and sure enough, there it is…

    • #40285

I have just installed this as I had Silverlight on my computer and there is no sign of any ad in Chrome or IE11. I do have GWX installed so that might make a difference.

    • #40286

      The plot thickens….

You’re saying you have GWX installed (KB 3035583), or GWX Control Panel?

It’s easy for the web site to check and see if you’re running Win7 or 8.1 (the User-Agent string in the HTTP header). If so, they could show the ad. But how would the Microsoft site know anything more?

    • #40287

The Microsoft “Get Silverlight” download page says that Chrome is no longer supported. I uninstalled Silverlight because of that. I rarely use Firefox and almost never Explorer, both of which support Sivlerlight. I assume I’m not going to miss out on anything that uses Silverlight to “enhance” my web experience as Microsoft would say.

Don’t know who this other Brian is but I did not post onJune 23rd 2016 as of yet. And I have stated before that I run kGW Control Panel 24/7. I don’t plan to install the new version of MS Silverlight as I have verssion 5.1.412.0 until ,you, Woody say it is clear to load.

    • #40289

So far as I have read on the “web”, this MS Silverlight is directed by MS to Norway and Serbia only. Not saying it won’t be directed to the rest of the world later.

    • #40290

People can choose any user name they like. That’s one of the consequences of having completely anonymous posts.

    • #40291

Silverlight is gone, long dead, utterly useless.

Although it’s still required on some Microsoft web sites. 🙂

    • #40292

Understood; brain lapses happen trying to keep up with the undertow created by Microsoft.

    • #40293

That is the precise reason I keep only the old version of Silverlight. If it kicks in on a web site ok if not ok.

    • #40294

In my case, this is not optional, this is on the important update list? Do I need this or just hide it?

    • #40295

Fuhgeddaboutit, unless you’re running Silverlight in Norway or Serbia…

    • #40296

Silverlight in Serbia…..is that like Moonlight in Vermont?

      I’m Brian….and so’s my wife 🙂

      (Sorry, couldn’t resist it)

    • #40298

I receive the update this morning, whereas it should’ve update yesterday as I didn’t get any from yesterday. As well as the date of the update is showing it update yesterday. The strange thing is that I’m not from Norway or Serbia (I’m actually from Australia). I ended up installing the update because it is listed as important but after successfully installed, it didn’t ask me to restart my computer so I have to restart it manually.

Adblock Plus’s companion add-on “Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus” can remove this banner ad.
May be a Firefox only addon though, similar addons look available for Chrome.

      Hi Woody:
I’m running windows 7 SP1. I live in California. I don’t know what is happening here but to me it is quite bizarre. Here it is:
      1.Placed Microsoft Silverlight , KB3162593 optional in hide on 6/22/2016, 12.6 MB
      2. Placed microsoft silverlight KB3126036 in hide,6/23/2016, 9:00pm, 12.6 MB
      3. Placed microsoft silverlight KB3106614 in hide, 6/23/2016,9:14 PM, optional 12.6 MB
      4.Placed microsoft silverlight KB3080333 in hide,6/23/2016, 9:18 PM,optional,12.5 MB5
      5. placed microsoft silverlight KB3056819 in hide,6/23/2016,9:20 PM,optional,12.5MB
      6.placed microsoft silverlight KB2977218 in hide,6/23/2016,9:23PM,optional, 12.5MB
7.Microsoft silverlight KB2636927,9:28PM, optional,12.5 MB, did not hide left it in updates to hopefully stop this madness????? As of 10:30PM 6/23/2016, (since I did not hide KB2636927, new updates for microsoft silverlight have stopped )Update for microsoft silverlight staying at KB2636927. I have never had anything like this happen before??? And Microsoft silverlight was deleted from my programs and features.
      Comments appreciated

      Cindy,
Not all Windows Updates require a restart afterward.

Fortran, C++, R, Python, Java, Matlab, HTML, CSS, etc.... coding is fun!

    • #40303

Not sure about the exact chain, but it sounds to me like you somehow got a bunch of very old patches. I wouldn’t worry about it. Just don’t install any Silverlight updates, and you should be fine.

    • #40304

Tried to uninstall KB3162593 once it’s installed? Can’t!

    • #40305

      Herb,
The same thing happened to me a while back. I could be wrong but it seemed to me that these were all versions of the same sort of patch and if you hide one of them it then offers you the previous version. So you hide (say) version 10, it then offers you the previous version 9; you hide version 9, it then offers you the previous version 8 etc etc.
I think I ended up hiding about 10 of them before it stopped. Good luck.

    • #40306

      Thanks CS Appreciate your feedback.
      Herb K

    • #40307

CS You were absolutely correct. I hid 5 more making a total of 11 updates for Microsoft Silverlight in hide. My windows update is now up to date, no new updates available. This is all absurd ??????
      Thanks Again

    • #40308

I think the current one is offered as a Cumulative (Rollup) Update and contains all the previous updates.
My point of view is that it should be installed by those who use Silverlight regardless of their own timezone and not installed by those who decided that they don’t need Silverlight at all.

    • #40309

@woody I think Silverlight comes in 2 flavours on Windows & Microsoft Update for Windows 7.
If Silverlight is installed, then the update comes as an Important Update.
If Silverlight is not installed, then it either comes as an Optional Microsoft Product if Microsoft Update is enabled, or is not offered at all if only Windows Update is enabled (or Microsoft Update is disabled, which is the same thing). This is the full product with all the patches included.
Both versions, the update and the full product are the same for the same round of updates.

    • #40310

Wasn’t Silverlight Microsoft’s poor reply to Flash? And now they both refuse to go away and we will be stuck with them for a while, due to the web sites which have not switched to newer technologies yet.

    • #40311

It is OK to install Cindy. If you were not asked to restart, it was because Silverlight and its components were not in use at the time of the update installation, which is a good thing as Silverlight is used only for a very limited number of web sites. I am in Australia too 🙂 and I am in favour of installing the update for consistency, if Silverlight was previously installed.

    • #40312

@lgjr3491 You would have to uninstall Silverlight completely from Programs and Features. KB3162593 is an Update Rollup and upgrades the whole installation of Silverlight.
At the end of the day, Woody is right that Silverlight should be uninstalled by the vast majority of end-users who should not be concerned with any updates for Silverlight.
If by accident Silverlight is required on a web site, the user would be informed about it and offered to install it.

    • #40313

Woody — While I always look to your great advice, here, regarding Silverlight, you are misleading the readers.

Whether you like it or not, there are at least three major financial systems that are built on Silverlight:
      * Fidelity ATP software
      * Thinkorswim trading software
      * freestockcharts.com – a longtime, well-respected real time charting website/service

So please don’t say Silverlight is dead or is useless because these 3 examples alone mean that many thousands or more of users need Silverlight.

    • #40314

I didn’t know that. Wow. Fidelity is still based on Silverlight? The rug is being pulled out from under them, with IE market share way, way down.

    • #40315

I don’t have Silverlight installed, and for June I received this Silverlight patch, noted as Important and checked, in my Windows Updates.

    • #40316

Netflix desktop for a PC (so thru a browser) used to require Silverlight. Now you can use it or html5. https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23742

    • #40317

Yep. I’ve been watching Netflix in Chrome and Firefox for quite some time. Works great on my Chromebook, too.
