There are many HardOCP readers that are still running Sandy Bridge CPUs and have been waiting with anticipation of one day upgrading to a new system. One of the biggest things asked in the last month is just how the 2600K stacks up against the new 7700K processor. So we got hold of one of our readers 2600K systems and put it to the test.

This is something I am quite interested in, since I have the Sandy Bridge processor compared to, here. I have yet to see a good reason to upgrade. Since I don’t over clock and probably won’t in the future with another processor(but would always want (K) for many reasons) there still is no good reason to upgrade to Kaby Lake. The BIG reason is most apps and simulators I run, don’t use the advanced features that gives one the true BIG performance Boosts.

I am much better off upgrading my Graphics cards for ONLY Train Simulator(YEAH, I have Love Trains since very Little), otherwise, even that is sufficient because it was upper end when I bought it.

      Best Regards,

      Crysta

I came across a PC World article last night that caused me to immediately stop considering a Kaby Lake processor for my next PC build. Kaby Lake will NOT support Win7. It probably won’t support Win8 either, but that’s not my concern (Win7 is my last Windows). Same goes for the AMD Zen chips as well.

If Win7 is your last Windows, take a look at this site that has a lot of info on Linux Skylake motherboards. I like it because they are not only reviewing high end boards, but also budget boards and 2011v3 socket boards.

I just checked and he did a review on an ASUS Z270 chipset (Kaby Lake motherboard running on Linux.

For my build I am looking more at Skylake Z170 boards, but since I have not bought anything yet will consider Kaby Lake. I am primarily interested in the up to 20 PCIe Gen 3 lanes for SSDs and video.

Woof! 128 articles and that’s just on motherboards! Thanks for that link, it’s the kind of site that I’ve been looking for.
