Is there a way to create a “vertical tab” that justifies text (one paragraph containing Alt-Enter new lines) to the bottom of the current page, analogous to a Right Tab? Footers are not a good solution as the text changes for every page that needs this treatment.

This functionality is needed in the Illustrations portion of a Thesis. Word document pages are used as over prints on sheets of existing graphics with a bottom justified text like “Figure 281, Northwest corner, Salle de Sece.” Current approach uses line formatting with “663 point spacing before the line” which is OK when there is only one line of text but it becomes complicated when multiple lines are needed. Footers contain Page numbers.

In Word 97, on the Layout tab of the Page Setup window, the Vertical Alignment of the document can be set to Justified. If you graphic is place immediately before a Page or Section Break, or just before the last paragraph mark of the document, then the text is inserted in front of the graphic, The text will be pushed to the top and the graphic will be pushed to the bottom of the page . Using my current Page Setup attributes, and one defined Paragraph style for the text, I was able to insert 23 lines of text before the graphic moved to the next page. This worked with one paragraph containing 23 lines, and with two paragraphs containing 3 and 20 lines. If the text is in more than one paragraph, the spacing between the paragraphs may be different on each page. If the text associated to a graphic is contained in paragraph, the text justifies to the top of the page, and the graphic justifies to the bottom, and the space between the text and graphic varies.

If I understand you correctly, you want to force the text to begin on the last line of the page and, if necessary, be pushed up a line at a time as additional lines are typed in. If this is the case, in Word 2000 go to File | Page Setup and select the Layout tab. In the drop down menu Vertical Alignment select Bottom. Remember that if you want to use this method, you should create a new section for your document (to avoid having this setup apply to your whole document).
