Not really sure how it will affect my Asus Win8.1 system. Still, I’m going to try to upgrade process and cross my fingers. lol

I’m only hoping it is a true upgrade Drew (i.e, my programs like Office for instance don’t get hosed). I’m really not in the mood to re-install my programs especially Photoshop CS5. Anyway, time will tell. Yes, I do have Win8.1 by the way; my ASUS came shipped with that. So far it’s been a heck of a machine and I’m pretty happy with it. 8.1 and Classic Shell’s been good. I’ll probably un-install Classic Shell prior to doing the upgrade since supposedly Win10 gives you your startmenu back. 🙂

The closet, most precise, I, personally, will go is this summer. Maybe (likely) July sometime; before school starts, for sure. Rumours of June, ah, maybe not. Later than July, really, doubtful.

      Microsoft have been more precise:

Hello World: Windows 10 Available on July 29

(and come out of the closet  )

That’s what I understood too. I clicked the little box and read about the plan on Microsoft’s site. But I don’t plan to do the actual upgrade until after the first few months at least, as there is always detritus involved with new rollouts so I figure I will wait until after they have had it out and all is running along well and then do the upgrade – we’ve got a full year and this is one instance I don’t plan to be an early adopter.

You don’t need to edit the registry to remove the notifications, just check for all or any of the following windows updates and uninstall them.
      3035583, 2952664, 3021917.
When you’re offered them again by WU, just hide them.

I’m running W7 v6.1 SP1 and have all three of those updates installed but I haven’t had the invitation to register for the update. I have selected “Check for updates and let me choose ….”: is that my problem? Does one HAVE to be invited to update to get it free?

          No.

Does one HAVE to be invited to update to get it free?

          No:

Can I get my free Windows 10 upgrade even if I didn’t reserve?
Yes. The easiest way to get the free upgrade is to reserve, but you can upgrade even if you don’t reserve.

Try this: Not getting the invitation to reserve Windows 10, this solution worked for me.

It’s showing now in both Windows 7 and 8. They probably left the UK to last as the softies in Redmond will be asleep when we get it!

    • #1507458

Easy enough to just hide the icon if you don’t like it. If you have no intention to upgrade, then I suppose you can un-install the KB that’s causing the nag, but I decided to just hide mine. I do hope Win10 is as good as I think it will be. I do have friends that have Win7 but I cautioned them to not jump the gun just yet. My Win8.1 should hopefully update flawlessless (crossing my fingers). 🙂

      • #1507498

Easy enough to just hide the icon if you don’t like it.

How to accomplish this? Takes up needed space. I saw KB3035583; is it necessary to remove the upgrade, and if so will that also cancel the upgrade I reserved?

        • #1507517

Click the “Show hidden icons” up arrow, Customize, change GWX to Only show notifications (or just drag the icon to the arrow).

I think if you remove that update then the upgrade may not be downloaded automatically when it first becomes available on July 29th.

          • #1507949

I think if you remove that update then the upgrade may not be downloaded automatically when it first becomes available on July 29th.

First, the message is that when Win 10 becomes available it will be automatically downloaded and you can install it when convenient to you. Presumably you can wait as long as you like. What is unclear is whether, if you do NOT download updates automatically under win 7/8.1, the upgrade will, like other Windows Updates not be actually downloaded until you ask for it.

Second, I have tried to ‘customise’ by asking to ‘Show notifications only’ three times. The icon is hidden when I do it but reappears as ‘Show icon and notifications’ on the next reboot. This seems an unnecessary nag especially after I have reserved and got confirmation of my reservation!

      • #1507863

I don’t think I will be upgrading to Windows 10. My reasons are as follows:

        (1) I use Windows Media Centre on my Windows 7 Ultimate desktop PC for my triple band PCI TV card. The card was not supplied with it’s own software as Media Centre has been available since Vista. Without Media Centre I will no longer be able to watch TV on the PC.

        (2) As this is an upgrade only version of Windows 10, what happens if I need to re-install Windows 10 on a new hard disk if my existing disk fails or if I find that the upgrade is not as stable as a stand alone installation.

My world (computer-wise) revolves around this PC as I have upgraded it over time. It has 8TB of storage space over 6 SATA disks (which are mostly full!), a quad CPU and 8GB of memory, 24″ 16:9 monitor etc. I keep upgrading it as funds permit so I think that for me Windows 10 may be a backward step. I wonder has anyone out there any suggestions or advice for me?

    • #1507484

Note that it does not offer the option to cancel your reservation (haven’t found that yet).

Clicking the menu icon then View confirmation gets a Cancel reservation link.

The hamburger icon (named “air vent” by the designer) is everywhere in Windows 10 for menus.

    • #1507554

Yeah; should have outlined the procedure but thought it was trivial. Still, for folks that play with the tray icons, they probably wouldn’t have done this before. lol

Thanks for showing the procedure Bruce. 🙂

    • #1507878

The safest way to remove the nag icon in the task bar but keep your Windows 10 upgrade option open is just to disable these two tasks:-

Task Scheduler – Task Scheduler Library – Microsoft – Windows – Setup – gwx
      disable launchtrayprocess
      disable refreshgwxconfig

I hid the the updates in Windows Update on all my Win 7 computers in my house. My Asus ROG G750 laptop and my self-built Asus-based desktop will stay on 7 until support ends in 2020. I will not be doing a free upgrade, as it doesn’t allow you to pick and choose which updates and patches are applied after that. Only paid versions let you have the control. I have instructed my wife to do the same on her Asus A73 laptop. My kids have Dell laptops with 8.1 (configured to look like 7 ) and I will leave them as is.

If all your computers have Home editions of Windows that is true. Windows 10 Pro (free or paid) will have control of updates.

      Thanks in advance.

    • #1507921

The article I read made no mention of a distinction. I also had not heard that if you had Pro editions of 7 that you would get Pro editions of 10. I will still stay with 7. I see no reason to upgrade from 7. The 2 with 8.1 are not Pro, but my kids use them so I am not invested. I will probably leave them alone.

    • #1507951

You can uninstall the update that enabled the notification.

    • #1507976

One reason to delay the download could be the date it’s due to happen – just a couple of days before month end. If you have a monthly data cap (as I do) and it’s nearly used up it might be wise to check first whether it can still accommodate what is likely to be a pretty large download.

So there’s the question in my mind: Do we know what size that Windows 10 download will be?

Thanks for that. I clearly wasn’t reading the small print.

It’s very useful to know, as I’m also advising a couple of not very tech-savvy friends who share their connection and are penny-pinching to an extreme when it comes to bandwidth – and are regularly terrified by Windows Update for that reason!

(I’ve now installed NetWorx on both their computers so that they can see exactly how they each are using their bandwidth, which has greatly reduced their anxieties.)

    • #1507997

I have not yet seen anyone comment on the potential problem of software that will not work with Windows 10. I have CorelDraw Design X5. I contacted Support for Corel and there is no update planned for Windows 10 usage. This happened when XP went to Win 7 and I was forced to purchase the X5 to function on my new Toshiba Core i7 system with Windows 7. I know this is not the fault of Microsoft but each time a new o/s comes out so many software versions suddenly require $$$ to allow use on the new system.
I will not be upgrading to Win 10 on this machine for this one reason. I will use the upgrade on my Asus Notebook where I can familiarize myself with it.

Here’s a link to answer ALL the questions. In the link if you open the links under Read This First – MS answers the queries. Scroll down to the section where questions are answered by an employee of MS and again I feel you will get all the answers you require. There is a list of W10 OS levels and what will be replaced/renewed. MS states that Windows Media Center will not be provided in W10 and will be uninstalled during the Upgrade to W7 & W8.1 currently running it. Furthermore, you will be advised when MS will do the Upgrade at a time to suit YOU. Cheers Neil.

Neil. Nobody can answer All the questions until MS publish their EULA for the different products.

You are correct in that Media Centre will not be carried forward though and users will be given the choice as to when W10 is actually installed.

I haven’t received the icon yet. Question, I have Win 7 Ultimate SP1. This came to me as a ‘Get Genuine Online Kit’. This came about as I had purchased a copy of Win 7 Pro from a well known auction site which turned out to be a Chinese copy! (Surprise Surprise!) After reporting this to Microsoft they sent me the aforementioned Win7 Ultimate. Could someone please answer this. Does this qualify as a genuine copy and allow me to receive Win 10? :(:

    • #1508154

There is & has been a lot of misinformation propagated, unfortunately.

      You’ve been reading the internet!

    • #1508156

Sadly, I was also misinformed, and under the false impression that it was the “free” version that was getting updates forced on them, not understanding that it is the Home version. But I will still hold onto 7 pro as long as possible. I would love it if I could get the upgrade file during the first year but not actually install it until much later.

    • #1508180

I tend to be of the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” school of thought. I do install all of the security updates…after a few days. But I have not seen a compelling reason to upgrade from a great OS to The Next New Thing if the one I have works fine and is properly updated and protected. Both my laptop and my desktop are barely a year old, and have high quality hardware and don’t expect to need upgrades to hardware or anything for quite some time.

As a disabled desktop data only user who will never buy a tablet or “smart” phone, Win 7 will be my final Windows. I was forced off Win XP, and had to go back to Realtek sound to get the stereo mix back and use my wav and MP3 editor. I will never put my info in the “Cloud”. I uninstalled several non-security updates, and I don’t get a nag icon. I already get online with Windows 7, and Linux Mint 17, which is on an external drive, and runs just as fast as Windows 7. When the time comes in 2020 when they try to force me to DOWNGRADE to that glorified smart phone Win 10 OS, I will be offline with Windows 7 enjoying my games, music, and joystick, and online with the latest Linux doing mindless stuff like checking email and surfing the web. Beware of “free” stuff, it comes with a heavy price.

Drew, I asked for enlightenment on this statement once before in this thread and since you seem very knowledgeable I’d really appreciate your procedure for watching TV, especially the copy protected channels. Unfortunately what I’ve tried doesn’t work without WMC and it seems that WMC is a goner in Win 10.

      • #1508574

Didn’t say it was junk, the high price of it is overwriting my beloved windows 7 OS, plus it does not allow a dual boot with another OS. No stereo mix, cloud computing, buying all my apps, making a Microsoft account. Free for just a year, huh? After all my joy has been overwritten, huh? Then I will have to buy it, huh? Linux Mint is also free. Microsoft giving something “free”??? They just want to overwrite your OS so you can be trapped in Windows 10. I ain’t going. No thanks. More power to you.

. . . and I was speaking of the heavy price of “free” Windows 10

    • #1508602

      @Win7Geezer,

You may dual boot with Windows 10. No one forces cloud computing on you. Not sure what you mean about “no stereo mix”. Most likely the apps you currently run on Windows 7 will run on Windows 10. The Get Windows 10 app can do a compatibility check if you want. A Microsoft account is not required. There are other threads about how to run without a Microsoft account. The upgrade to Windows 10 is free for the first year. Once you upgrade to Windows 10 all updates to Windows 10 are free for the life of the device.

I do not believe that the free downloads of W10 will be free for the life of the device – at least, not in the sense that everyone seems to believe.

MS is not a charitable institution – quite the reverse – and has complained in the past that people to not upgrade to every new version of Windows, Office, etc. And leopards do not change their spots.

It’s my belief that come 29/06/2016, with users locked in to W10, with no reverting back to earlier versions, patches and other forms of support will necessitate the payment of a monthly or annual fee. By this means the OS ill remain free, as promised, but anyone wishing to use it safely will have to pay, and as yet we have no idea the size of the subscription.

Drew, you seem to be very knowledgeable about Win 10, and have dominated this thread, so why don’t you substantiate your claim that it will still be possible to watch TV on a PC lacking WMC, as twice requested by TDF?

      • #1508858

Drew, thanks for that. My win 7 Ult is genuine, I received it from Microsoft and it’s registered to me. I still haven’t received the ‘Get Win 10’ app yet and I’m wondering if it’s because my Win 7 is a complimentary copy. Knowing how weird MS is with some things they may say that as my copy was supplied free it doesn’t count! My machine is one I built about 3 years ago and is well within the spec required for Win 10. Can’t think of any other reason why I’ve not got the Win 10 app. I know I can download it in July but if I have a problem I want to know before then so I can sort it. I’ll probably try ringing MS and see what they say. That could be fun!!

In my opinion, Win 7 users are not going to like Win 10. I suggest you get the free Win 10 beta and check it out before you accept the free Win 10 upgrade.

    • #1508914

Well no, the “general buzz” finds nothing of the sort. You sound like a MS shill but there is really too much of that silliness on the net so I won’t accuse you of that. You are one of those techies that thinks that the newest hottest latest is the best stuff, not understanding that most computer users just want to do what they want to do and don’t want how its done to ever change. Win 7 to Win 10 is a huge change.

Fellow Loungers, I have Sandbagged the lounge for years, and followed some good advice from the loungers. As to the Windows 10 upgrade, I say “Read the fine print Very carefully.”. What looks good now, may come back to haunt you latter on. As to Microsoft, the company is definitely not a charitable institution. If they were, they would have upgraded XP to a passable current level. Lets face it, ALL Operating Systems, including Linux, have catches and faults, Nothing is perfect. Microsoft does not want to lose it’s market share, it wants to ensure a future market share. I have to agree with the axiom “If it isn’t broke, don’t try to fix it.”. There is no such thing as a free lunch. These operating systems do not conform to you, you conform to them. I have said my piece. thanks for listening. Kjax

    • #1509306

      Thanks, BruceR.

As it happens, the app appeared this morning, 11 June, so I’m well equipped for the upgrade now! But I’ll be a little cautious and wait a few weeks for it to settle down.

    • #1509379

No need to be like that… Several activities in addition to contributing to this Forum, just moved (home) on Monday & this wknd was @ Spruce Meadows since Friday for the National.

It’s prolly a moot point for you as W10 does TV in conjunction w/ Xbox.

      Drew

And so everybody has an Xbox? Sorry I’m of the deprived class that only has WMC as a DVR. That in conjunction with tuners like those provided by SilliconDust or Ceton work extremely well in Windows 7/8.1. I fail to understand Microsoft’s purpose in excluding WMC from Win 10. And yes I do checkout each build of the Preview/Insider releases. The previous release and current release in dual boot configuration on SSD partitions. But no TV so far.

OK, this horse is sufficiently dead.

        Hi

Just wondering here I dual boot Win8.1 Pro and Win 7 Home Prem. Had the reserve icon on both OS about a week back. I’ve reserved both using different e mail addresses. Will I get 2 downloads when they’re up and running or just the 1. Both are legit Windows registered etc.

    • #1509826

You may have just presented an interesting dilemma for both yourself and Microsoft.

In the classic licensing sense from Microsoft, you are typically only allowed one instance of Windows on a PC unless the 2nd instance is a fully purchased or paid for new license (not an upgrade). It is possible that you may not be allowed to do a 2nd upgrade on the same PC.

However, Microsoft has not been predatory on that point as it seems they allow (and support) multi-boot without making you suffer for it. Yet, Microsoft is changing and the Win10 upgrade scenario may be the place where they might enforce their licensing considerations.

I believe their intent with the Win10 upgrade offer, is just once on a PC (if your 2nd copy of Windows on your PC is a fully paid for license, I think you are okay). However, we have not yet seen ALL of that which comes with the “free” upgrade. There may be restrictions not yet exposed to the media or revealed through those taking part in the Win10 preview activities.

I would suggest NOT invoking an upgrade to either of your installed systems until well after the July 29 release date. That way, you will get the benefit from those whose purpose seems to be finding out this kind of stuff … Windows Secrets being one of the best places for that information. I think we are all going to learn a lot before this is complete.

My best guess is that a lot of people won’t convert (upgrade) to Win10 for whatever reason that exists. Some will invoke the upgrade but roll back due to issues. Be sure to take image copies of your existing systems before performing the upgrade on either one. In my case, I will clone the disk(s) so they can be easily replaced if something goes badly.

Well the Win 7 Prem is a bought and paid for the 8.1 is an up grade from XP Pro that I used to use for work. I agree with you that I won’t be upgrading either till the end of the year at the earliest. Both OS are on seperate discs so when I do the do I’ll disconnect the other disc. Probably keep Win 7 as I prefer it for some of my programmes.

    • #1515558

Correction, don’t think, know W10 is the best route to go. And that transcends A/Bing OS to OS. What you suggest does apply to W7 to W8.1 but, not to10. W10 is better but, it does not have the learning cure you imply. In fact, although you may have a negative view towards W10 the majority of the globe does not seem to share said view. Thanks for the name-calling but, no, just a realist and an IT Pro that as such needs to have a full & accurate understanding of things. MOST W7 owners like 10; it is not weird to the many who found W8.1 very strange.

Remember, Windows 10 Platform is far more than just its OS. A whole new & better way of computing & improving the End User experience.

But, this and other IT Forums help people understand & appreciate Windows 10. Maybe there are other Forums or Threads that would be a really good fit for what interests you.

      Cheers,
      Drew

I was trying to be nice Drew, but you are a troll. Win 10 is not “new and better” and its not “the best route to go”. You are spouting this silliness all over the web and its hard to believe you have no vested interest in the success of win 10 in spite of its serious problems.
