Hi everyone, I’m using “Windows Live Mail 2011” & keep getting junk mail from people impersonating banks etc, I keep adding these people & their domains to the blocked senders, but it doesn’t seem to work, how can I block these people ?,

The problem is the senders of this junk keep changing their sending address. Have you tried contacting the email account provider to see what filters they have in place. (WLM is only a mail client, not an actual email address)

Also, WLM 2012 seems a nice upgrade from WLM 2011.

I used to forward to the banks they were impersonating, but I’m bored with doing that now :mellow:

What you can do is go to Message Rules and set up rules for certain words in the SUBJECT line. For example, if you keep getting messages that say Health Insurance in the subject line, and you don’t get any legitimate mails with that in the subject line, you can set up a rule that sends anything with those 2 words in the subject line straight to the “deleted messages” basket. It never gets to the inbox. See if you can tell if certain product or service names keep showing up. If these are ones you would not normally expect to get in email, then add them to the original message rule. Check the “deleted” box at least once a day just to make sure you didn’t miss anything. In a few weeks you may find you have filtered out about half of what comes in.

I too am having major problems with junk for (WLM) and I try the subject line also. I find they change the wording on that also. Is there something else we can try. I got so tired of weeding thru the junk to find the legit email that I now use the filter rules to filter my good mail into a different folder, that seems to work better. But I still have to weed thru the junk just to make sure there is no legit mail. Before they went to WLM it was hotmail and my account was hacked they stole my contacts list so I get a lot of junk addressed from my daughter now. Sad we have to go thru this.

I used to be able to use the email addresses but they are now changing them each time so that no longer works. Some ISPs have filters that catch a certain amount of spam so you never see it. If your mail provider lets you mark messages as spam before deleting, then they will also go after the spammers and find a way to add them to their automatic filters which does help over time if you do this consistently for a few weeks. You have to go to your mail online on their website to do this so if you see spam email in your computer’s inbox, just jump on over to the email on the provider’s website and delete the spam there.

Sometimes you can set up a rule for certain words that often turn up in spam like Vi–ra, or others, and you can easily put them into your message rules.But others are more tricky, like insurance or weight. You pretty much can’t really filter out all messages that have insurance in the subject line.

There are some repeat senders you can block like the ADT people or the ink people. You put in a rule that blocks anything with ADT in the sender line, for instance. If you are getting a lot of spam mail from the Mailbox Worm (the one with the blank subject line, no text, and just a link in the body of the email) you have to decide whether to email the sender and ask them to change their email password to lock out the worm (this doesn’t always do it), or just block all their mail from then on through message rules. There is no way to block all spam, that I know of. I seemed to be rid of most of it in Nov. and Dec. and now I’m getting a lot of it. I figure the spammers invented some new ways to get around my filters but when I have time, and I have figured out something in common among some of them, I’ll set up some new rule blocks. I do think that getting to your provider’s webmail quickly and turning in the spammers while they are still in the act of flooding my provider with spam has helped. I have never seen so much junk mail as hotmail. No matter what I do there is always so much. When it shows up in my inbox I usually just send it to junk folder. Doesn’t seem to stop anyone. I wish Outlook would stop it in the first place. I have sent many messages asking just that but it doesn’t help. I get tired of setting up rules all the time so like I said I set the rules for my “good” mail and have it sent to the alias outlook folder, seems to be easier.

You can make the settings pretty restrictive if you care to. You can also “sweep” your Inbox to clean it up.

Hotmail is a very widely used service. Therefore, the spammers are likely aiming for it a lot. Perhaps you could get an email address on an “unknown” domain, one the spammers aren’t aiming for.

For example, you might get your own domain, and then go with Dotster or some other company (yahoo, Gmail, Microsoft, or whoever) to host your domain and your email service. It wouldn’t cost much, and you’d have a permanent, custom-tailored email address of your own choosing.

Thanks Jim, Can’t do that no income coming in so I need to go as cheep as possible and “free” is cheap.
It’s getting better. I just set up rules for my good mail and send it to my alias outlook. So far it is working but sometimes sites have more than 1 email. Rules don’t let you use more than 1 email on each rule. Be nice to add all emails for 1 site on 1 rule.

Thanks Joe…..I like sweep. I would like it better if the spam stopped but I guess this is something we live with when we go free. I have some other email accounts that don’t get any spam and I use that for really personal things.

I use Outlook 2007 as my primary email client, although I have 2 MSFT accounts. I watch the junk folders in each of my accounts, and when they reach a certain point, I go into the webmail through SkyDrive, and “Sweep” the junk mail folder. By doing this, I have noticed a slight difference in the amount of junk mail received. I can say however that at least its not getting to my inbox though. Although some but not much does make it through to my phone.
