AskWoody PlusSeptember 23, 2024 at 9:12 am #2705601Unbeliveable Toolbox. Will replace at least half a dozen links and icons to tools I already use. Thanks!!
But, question:
Last tab is Kinguin. Had not heard so went off to their site. How can Office at $30 and CCleaner at .69 (!) and Esey at $7.58 possibly be legit??? If it is, I’ll fill a shopping bag. But highly suspiciious and surprised inclkuded with Jim’s.
Thoughts?

AskWoody_MVPSeptember 23, 2024 at 9:18 am #2705602You will notice that the file you downloaded has a .7z extension instead of the familiar .zip extension. This is not a new thing. This type of high-compression file, created by 7-Zip, file has been around for years. You will need 7-Zip to continue, but seriously: 7-Zip should be on every Windows computer you own. Go ahead and get it installed. Only takes a second.
Windows 11 version 24H2 includes support for .7z files.

AskWoody PlusSeptember 23, 2024 at 9:09 pm #2705750I have Win 11 23H2 and it unzipped it happily natively.
For those who forget to elevate the executable, you can right click on the unpacked “Toolbox v5.6.exe” file and select the Properties tab, then select the Compatibility tab, then check the “Run this program as an administrator” check box and hit the Apply button. Then every time you run the app, it’ll start elevated with admin rights. Microsoft Defender Smart(alec)Screen pops up, but just click on More info, then Run anyway.

AskWoody MVPSeptember 26, 2024 at 5:54 pm #2706339Sorry, @wdunwoody , but per the specs on the OlderGeeks website, the minimum spec for the OS is Windows 10:
Perhaps Deanna can reach out to the program’s author to see if he thinks it will or won’t run on Windows 7. If he says that it will run on Windows 7, make sure that you install it on a 64 bit version of Windows 7 and not a 32 bit version. The word “minimum” in the specs may very well be because there is a 32 bit version of Windows 10 that some folks have installed.

Ah yes; ALL versions of Windows 11 have been able to read .7z files for nearly a year:
New! This update adds native support for reading additional archive file formats using the libarchive open-source project, such as:
.tar
.tar.gz
.tar.bz2
.tar.zst
.tar.xz
.tgz
.tbz2
.tzst
.txz
.rar
.7zNovember 14, 2023 — KB5032190 (OS Builds 22621.2715 and 22631.2715)

AskWoody PlusSeptember 27, 2024 at 12:17 pm #2706469I humbly suggest that these columns be labeled “Not for Consumers” per Susan’s usage regarding Updates.
While I have used Windows for thirty years, I have always depended on local support for the sorts of tasks usually covered in your column. I depend on Susan’s category to lead me to information/actions regarding Updates, etc. that I can understand.
Just a suggestion for the benefit of any others who pursue the basics,

FYI… On July 11, 2024 I downloaded 7-Zip from Older Geeks for my wife to use on our HP Desktop PC. I did not want to pay another $239.88 for a one-year subscription to Adobe Acrobat Pro that I do have on our HP Laptop PC. Well, that seriously affected the Dropbox app on the Desktop PC by NOT allowing a right click on a folder to allow the “Copy Dropbox Link” function. When I saw a small window with “7-Zip” popping up on my Desktop PC when attempting to “Copy Dropbox Link” I uninstalled the 7-Zip app using the Windows Apps tool. The only problem is that we still cannot use our Dropbox app on the Desktop PC. I have contacted Older Geeks.com for help in removing the residual 7-Zip code or finding a setting in Dropbox that will change what Dropbox is looking for to let us use the “Copy Dropbox Link” tool.
Just letting you know that installing 7-Zip had unintended consequences in this situation. It might affect other users with Dropbox.
BTW, I’ve been with “Ask Woody” since it was called “Windows Secrets” and this is the first time I have been concerned enough to send a message back to you. Thanks to ALL of you for your exceptionally helpful articles and the MS Defcon alerts.
