I couldn’t help but think of Jezza when I read this.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 31, 2010 at 2:43 pm #1207475I’ve often seen that comment about runners never having smiles on their faces and that as an indicator of pleasure in the pasttime.
From a runner’s perspective, you should see the looks on driver’s faces as they drive past. That don’t look like fun at all!! (And don’t get me started on Mums driving their offspring to school in the morning … that is truly scary!)

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 31, 2010 at 6:39 pm #1207492I ran in excess of 2000 miles last year, it took me to places I would have never reached normally, I have seen and heard wildlife and stumbled upon beautiful scenery only miles from my door. Traced routes of ancient Roman roads by map and compass, yesterday I watched the moon hovering in cloud and at the same time saw the sun rise over a hard frosted landscape. I have been invited into a church by the vicar and offered a cup of tea and eaten sweet cox’s apples straight from the branch as I ran by and other days run waist deep in water to reach the other side to continue, ran in thunder, lightning, sun, rain, snow and have been hailed upon whose size was that of broad beans.
I have run a 30 mile race competitively but sat down at the end to a hearty meal and drank beer with my trail rivals.
In all that time I have never grumbled (well only a little) learnt things I never knew about myself but in all that time I have always had a smile within me.
What is on my MP3 player you ask? Nothing, absolutely nothing there is just too many things to see and do when running.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 2, 2010 at 5:37 pm #1207740I just got a giggle from the image of running to Yakety Sax. As my FIL is/was a sax player – this has been often played in our house.
I don’t really wear an Ipod whilst running, personally I find them quite dangerous as you can’t hear traffic or other people around you. I can’t stand it when people turn up for a club night for a run and then put on an Ipod…gone all conservation!
Last year I entered a 6 hour trail race (run as far as you can in the time) and thought that as it was going to be circuits it would be boring so put on my Ipod but got the play order wrong play order and instead of a nice placid opera I hadput this on. I went blatting off at some ridiculous pace that had me panting for breath…not what you want in a race of this type.
BTW Iron Maiden and Opera can be on the same play list

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 2, 2010 at 7:15 pm #1207755I am no longer a runner, but I am cyclist and I often ride on the bike paths in Melbourne. These are known as “shared paths”.
I find walkers/runners with IPods a nuisance.
They walk/run in the middle of the track completely unaware of what is going on around them. I come up behind them and they don’t hear you – ring the bell and they still don’t here – just stick resolutely to the absolute middle of the path.
PS I don’t even own an mp3 player.

Carry a small air horn.
They’ll HEAR!

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 4, 2010 at 8:13 pm #1208110I agree with Jezza about the portable music device. I don’t wear one cycling or running. I love to see what is around and hear what is around me. I also love the ideas that float through my mind when I am exercising. I think the ideas must be in my blood somewhere but don’t get to my brain until I run … (no, don’t go there)
Our running group is affilliated with Triathlon Australia and as such uses their rules. The rules state that no entrant will wear headphones during a race (or some wording like that). We often get new people to the group who insist that they wear them and then go running off into the bush, not a clue as to the course, and get upset when they get lost. There’s no way I am yelling louder to them to keep them on track, if they are selfish enough to block out sounds around them, and I’m running as fast as I can. One runner even said to me “I have to wear them, I can’t stand the sound of my own breathing”.
