I am looking for a good free Javascript Menu script (or collection of scripts) that works with Netscape 4 ( as well as the newer ones.)
I have been looking around and I can find lots of free scripts that work with IE and Netscape 6, but I can’t find any that work properly with Netscape4. The best I have found so far is something that “downgrades gracefully” with Netscape 4.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

      Hi John,

I don’t do a lot of fancy JavaScript coding – especially not by hand. I’m mostly hesitant because of the same compatibility issues you’re discovering. When I do use JavaScript Menus, I usually have Macromedia’s Fireworks create the code for me. It’s not the cleanest code, but it works with all browsers I’ve tried… Also, you can find some programs that generate menus in Flash format, which will be universally compatible as long as the user has (and uses) the Flash plugin. (An example is Swish – more are listed on the Download.com site)

Anyway, here is a link to Download.Com’s Web Developer section. I see lots of software here that seems to do what you need – some free, some not.

      Hope this helps!

        Thanks Mark

I have downloaded a couple more from download.com to play with. I don’t use Fireworks, and avoid plugins so I can’t use either of those options.

I vaguely recall Leif providing a link to a good JavaScript site in several posts, but I can’t remember what it was. Maybe a few searches will turn it up?

Do you mean the Javascript Source?

Thanks I have visited this site and got another to try.

My experience of a number of download sites is that they list lots of things that sound promising, but after downloading (and perhaps installing) and then experimenting, I find that it does not quite do what I want.

I have found a good script by looking at the source code of a page I liked. It turns out that the script is the one used by Fireworks. It seems that it is not copyright and is free to use. It can be downloaded from http://www.macromedia.com/support/firework…ted_js_file.htm%5B/url%5D
The script is not enough by itself of course. You need a second script to hold data about the menus, and to know what to put in the document itself. Most of these scripts also require a style sheet – I am not sure in this case.

http://popup.jscentral.com[/url%5D provides a free (with credits) or cheap popup menu with great features. See http://www.royalporthcawl.com[/url%5D for an example.
