Trying to install Java 6. Whether I try to install on-line or off, I get the same error message:
    “Error- Java Installer”
“The installer cannot proceed with the current Internet Connection settings. Please visit the following web site for more information.
    http://java.com/en/download/help”

The site does not list this error message, the closest it gets is one about setting up proxy settings which I don’t think applies.
I have a broadband connection which is working perfectly.
I have tried the off-line installation, disconnecting broadband and shutting down my Kaspersky Internet suite, I have disabled the spyware apps., I have reset IE7; but no matter what I try I get the same message.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Many thanks

    Jim

      Welcome to the Lounge!

First of all, make sure that the latest version (4.5) of Windows Installer is installed on your computer.
This version is installed by update KB942288. To check it, click Start > Control Panel, then “Add or Remove Programs”, and check “Show updates” checkbox at the top of the window. Wait until the list will be populated and scroll down to “Windows XP – Software Updates”. Look for “Hotfix for Windows XP (KB942288-v3)” (Don’t ask me why v.4.5 is listed as v3.)
If you don’t have it on the list, download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details…&displaylang=en%5B/url%5D – the last file at the bottom of the page (“WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe”).

Second, make sure that you downloaded the latest version of Java Runtime (Version 6 Update 7).
The name of the file for offline installation is jre-6u7-windows-i586-p-s.exe and the size is 15,610 KB (15.2 MB).
You can download it from http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=23111%5B/url%5D

And third, try to install it from “Add or Remove Programs” Control Panel applet. Open “Add or Remove Programs”, click on “Add New Programs” icon on the left pane, then “CD or Floppy” button on the right pane, on the next window click Next, then Browse on the next screen and point it to the Java Runtime Environment Installation file you downloaded.

      Good luck!

        That worked perfectly; thank you!
Now all I have to do is work out how to get rid of the old versions of Java and Flash Player that “Software Inspector” reports are on my machine.
        Anyway, thanks again.

You can uninstall previous versions from “Add or Remove Programs” applet (open it, wait until Currently Installed Programs list will be populated, scroll it down, select (click on) the installed program and then click on Remove button.)

But I am wonder, do you have any particular reason to uninstall previous versions?
