• Items are being Indexed

I use Outlook 2013 as my PC email client. I have some very large mailboxes with several years of (old) email. Whenever I search any of my mailboxes (using the Search Current Mailbox) I get a message that says “Search results might be incomplete because items are being indexed”. If I click on that message I get a popup saying “Outlook is currently indexing your items. 36817 items remaining to be indexed.” It seems that Outlook _never_ finishes indexing my email. A couple of the mailboxes have not changed or email added for the past year, but I still get the error message for these mailboxes.

Windows search seems to work fine and Indexing Options has Outlook checked as something to index. I just get incomplete searches in Outlook.

Any suggestions? I have tried rebuilding the index, but the problem has remained.

Update: I just let Outlook sit open for the past hour or so with nothing else happening, and I don’t get the “indexing” message any more. Very strange. This has happened before, and then the issue occurs again. (I use Outlook to connect to Outlook.com – not to a corporate Exchange server.)

I’m guessing that your Outlook searches complete successfully now.

Indexing is done as a background task which ends up taking a long time. Once the initial indexing is complete further indexing of new or changed data should not be too time consuming. Anything which changes the source data for the index such as re-building the OST file for Outlook or re-building the index itself will cause the very time consuming initial index process to be done. Beyond that, I suppose there could be a bug in some indexing process that corrupts the index. You did not say what OS you are running but it should be up-to-date with patches.
