Boy, am I glad I keep WU disabled. I would have been screwed several times by now.

    • #85155

Yep, I had it hidden and now it’s back. Just hid it again. I have metered connection on, so I believe that if it gets unhidden again and WU tries to install, the install will fail and I will get a notification. Then I can hide it again, restart the computer and I believe WU will run again and this time not find it.

If you have WIN 10 Pro, you can disable check for updates with GPEdit. Woody has an article about that here:

      http://www.infoworld.com/article/3053701/microsoft-windows/block-windows-10-forced-updates-without-breaking-your-machine-part-2.html

If you have WIN 10 Home, cough up $99 for the Pro Pack. It’s well worth it. Or, you can disable check for updates by editing the registry or using the tool Woody recommends in his article referenced above. He explains how to do it both ways.

I prefer to disable checking for both Quality and Feature updates. I’ve had MS slip too many Break, Brick, and Hose Updates, or updates that refuse to install, by me while I wasn’t looking.

Then, you can use wushowhide to re-hide any updates or upgrades MS un-hides, or you might want to try the Windows Update Minitool. You can download it here:

      http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_update_minitool.html

      It’s a little more user-friendly, IMO.

CAUTION: Woody DOES NOT recommend using this tool. See here:

Thank you dononline. I have Win 10 Home. I will look into the Pro Pack and your other suggestions. I don’t want to touch the registry myself…I’ll read Woody’s articles you mention. Thanks again.

You’re very welcome and good luck. If you have any questions or need help, this is the place to be. In addition to Woody himself, the Lounge has many, many very helpful and knowledgeable members, much more so than I, that will jump in with excellent advice and help. You’ll also want to keep up with Woody’s posts over at AskWoody to stay on top of things. His MS-DEFCON system keeps us all on track every month.

U can also try this link

But bear in mind that M$ can always reset the configuration settings of nearly all Win 10 Home, Pro & Ent cptrs thru a mandatory auto-update or esp thru the next feature update/upgrade, eg Version 1703 in April 2017. “Resistance is futile” – by Borg in Star Trek.

      Woody,

Do you know if Hiding in PSWindowsUpdate, Hide-WUUpdate, is any different that the Troubleshooter method? It seams to me that using the Troubleshooter(which I haven’t used in ages) might give MS more Direct control???

There are allot of great features in that module, which I use in PS ISE so I can access the whole module at once with all of the memory joggers. Mine not so good anymore 😛
I never use the WU GUI except for Fast Ring D/L to update Windows.

There in also a great ‘Defender’ Module that comes with PS ISE, that I use allot too.

Keeping Auto WU ON and then complaining is a just bad practice

and again, it’s not “unhiding”, just a new version/revision for same update
it actually still have the same internal KB number 3012973 since Technical Preview 🙂

Windows Update MiniTool is essentially the GUI equivalent for PSWindowsUpdate

all the three tools (with wushowhide) serves the same purpose

I don’t imagine they are the same code, therefore they may handle the Metadata differently.

From patchmanagement.org See the NOTE at the bottom.

subject: Re: [patchmanagement] ‘Defer upgrades’ and 1607 Feature Update no longer being offered
      mailed-by: listserv.patchmanagement.org

      I’ve noticed a couple things…

      1. Last week if you had “Defer Upgrades” enabled and were using Windows Update, for the first time you would see the ‘Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607’ appear as available.

      2. After a couple days that feature update once again disappeared for people who had “Defer Upgrades” enabled. However, it was still showing for people who had “Defer Upgrades” disabled. The metadata put the update in the ‘Updates’ category/classification.

      3. Today if you have “Defer Upgrades” enabled you are now once again seeing the feature update re-appear. However, this time the metadata puts it in the “Upgrades” category/classification. Until today I have not ever seen “Upgrades” as a classification for updates delivered from Windows Update or Microsoft Update. Also the metadata for ‘size’ property is different (I’m seeing approx 4GB now vs 3GB a couple days ago), which I assumes means that the update is actually different media than what was posted previously.

Note, if an update had previously been hidden but then Microsoft modifies the metadata, it will become unhidden. This is almost certainly why you are getting reports of people seeing it re-appear.

I was wondering why this kept happening! I thought it was some kind of glitch with my computer or the program. I doubt they’re ever going to bother fixing this, since we all know by now how much MS loves forcing upgrades.

Actually, I DOUBT MS will even see this as a BUG! As far as they are concerned there are no more “excuses” at least after CBB. If that breaks things….. OH Well, you aren’t paying anything anyway. Even if you are paying, its not enough, so you still have money to replace everything that breaks…… O.o OH MY, I had better stop there…… 😛

PS There are some nice people at MS that don’t agree with the Official Policies and Approaches BUT there are getting fewer and fewer in the EXECUTIVE SUITES WHERE IT COUNTS. Just sayn’.

Doesn’t it look like there’s an epidemy of this? Not just @MS, not just @tech corps, not just in business, but also in society. The future is tyranny.

Today two of my friends got the virus called feature 1607, one of them was lucky he enough he had a shadow copy of 1511 then he closed WU completely, the other one is installing linux as we speak, honestly the way MS pushs updates no matter what ppl do to prevent upgrading knowing it destroyed alot of machines globaly costing ppl money make me sick, i do not understand that, MS s*** is on every new machine in the markets, in egypt where i live we do not buy HP or dell anymore cause of win10, am sorry to say that but MS should replace erry one in the WU office or what ever they call it cause they aint but a group of half talented control freaks if they wanna keep windows going on, i do ask if they trying to kill MS?

      Hi

they all use/call Windows Update API, which handles the metadata in the same manner

    • #91102

HI there! Well. I was done with all this hide and seek game, so I did everything to finally have the 1607 version, which failed maybe 10 times over the months, since august in fact.

I desinstalled my antivirus which was provided by my IP, Videotron. I made sure windows defender was updated and running. I desinstalled as well Malwarebytes anti malware, which was maybe a cause in the recent 1607 failing update.

I have wifi, non metered. So I hope it will update next time windows will try.

For now, I cannot set the time for the installation, doesn’t know why, but The computer won’t stay ON overnight, it ruined a good night sleep two days ago, with all the bips, due to many reboots LOL.

It is not fair, most of you don’t want any updates or upgrades, I WANT THEM so badly!!

If my new settings continue to fail with the 1607 installation, I will try some tools to see what can be done. Thanks Woody, you gave me recently many hints to have my issue resolved. The pc is runnung superfine with 1511, but soon or later, some upgrade has to be done. I don’t want to have to format and reinstall if it’s possible to avoid! So many heavy softwares on C and D dd!

Have a great superbowl all! Salutations from Quebec city, Canada xxx

        Hi Therese,

        From Calgary, AB

Take a look at the Posts here, as well as mine at the bottom:

        Problems upgrading from 1511 to 1607 https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/problems-upgrading-from-1511-to-1607/

Now one thing that didn’t cross my mind this morning, Why are you relying on MU/WU for your Upgrade. There is an updated ISO available that you can Download, Mount it on a vDVD in Explorer and run the “Setup.exe”

        Download Windows 10 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you still have problems follow my points in my other Post.

Here is to success…. 😀

To each his own, but this is precisely why MS screws its users.
