is update still possible?

Years ago I bought my sister-in-law a Dell all-in-one.  She was an artist, and had overcome two rounds of cancer.  The past 9 months she entered her third and final bout with cancer, this time pancreatic cancer, and she passed away a week ago today.

I brought her laptop home (she lived almost 4 hours drive away) and fired it up – it is still on Win 10 (not upgradeable) at 2H21.  When I tried to update, the system just says that updates are needed, and it removes the “check for updates” capability.

Is there a way to bring the pc to 2H22, which I believe is the last non-emergency update?  We will be recovering some files, etc, to settle her (negative) estate.

Not too late to update.
It wouldn’t hurt to check the system first.
In an elevated Command Prompt (run as Administrator), run:
chkdsk /f
After the reboot, run:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Then make a full disk image backup and separate data backup.

Download GRC’s InControl (read how to use) and place it on the desktop. Change the settings to Win10 and 22H2 and “Take Control.” Reboot and check if you are offered 22H2.
If it doesn’t show up, then Release Control.

I tried your approach, and it brought back memories of when I upgraded a still-older (2011) all-in-one I keep for use with my scanner and for backup (during the “ready now” period recommended in your column).  I ran the prep, and it seemed to go very well, although slowing significantly as I approached the 90% complete level.  It continued to slow, and after 12 hours at 99%, I just rebooted, signed in, and I am back in more-secure operation.
