Tonight, August 27, 2014, I got a message that Microsoft had released update KB 2993651, that will attempt to substitute for KB 2982791, an update that seemed to cause a lot of trouble, including BSOD’d. It was one of four updates Microsoft released on “Black Tuesday”, August 12. Microsoft withdrew the four about four days after they’d been released, and recommended everyone uninstall KB 2982791, the version that was for Windows 7, 64 bit. (I think they recommended uninstalling the other three, also.)

So now they have a “New, Improved” update they’re recommending I install, KB 2993651. I think I’ll wait and see.

Does anyone have experience with KB 2993651? And can anyone tell us how much risk there is if we don’t install it?

Yes, I just got this and hesitated. Once bitten, twice shy, right? Not that I got bitten by the original problem patch, which is why I’m reluctant.

Not having KB2982791 installed and like to have all security updates installed, I’ve installed this and so far no problems.

MS strongly recommend you uninstall KB2982791 (if you haven’t already) before installing this replacement KB.

I didn’t have any problems after installing all of this month’s updates, but following a restore with a system image from prior this month’s updates – I found that when reapplying this month’s updates, KB2982791 was no longer included but all of the other 12 were for my Win 7 x64.

I too am interested on KB2993651; same for me. Restored it and it never re-appeared.

So now we are seeing KB2993651, hopefully Susan will be shedding some light on this one.

Could you post a link to her column or web site. Two people have mentioned her, so I suppose she’s an expert whose advice we can trust.

I always keep my Windows Updates in top order without any problems so I’m wondering how do I keep up with such recommendations & issues?
      — I guess I better get back to keeping up with Susan Bradley’s columns even though my computers run fine
      — Any other recommendations?

I do have KB2982791 installed on Aug 15; I wasn’t aware that it was recommended to uninstall it. I have 3 Windows 7 32-bit computers but it appears that the issues with KB 2982791 apply to Windows 7, 64 bit. I would like to note that I haven’t had any problems with any one of my 3 computers with KB2982791 installed.

KB2993651 is being recommended to be installed as I write this. Since I have 32-bit systems I suspect it will be ok to install KB2993651

I used to be very diligent about every Windows Updates but since I haven’t ever had any Windows Updates issues I do let them install not automatically but after I view what’s scheduled to be installed. In summary I’ve probably become spoiled expecting Windows Updates to be OK but I don’t want to take Windows Updates installs for granted. Too many of my friends have issues with Windows Updates but I never want to get there

I also installed kb2982791 and had no problems whatsoever on any of the computers that it is installed on, which leads me to the question of whether I should install kb2993651 (patch watch say’s to put a hold on BOTH of them). So hopefully there will be some clarification as to whether kb2993651 can be installed even if kb2982791 is already installed. The MS page mentions nothing about whether the fix can be installed along with the previous update. What a mess.

If you’ve previously installed KB2982791 and are not having problems you do NOT have to uninstall it. Microsoft is recommending it be uninstalled so you won’t be confused later if you see both KB2993651 and KB2987291.

LOL, I guess MS doesn’t want you to be confused even though they confused everyone already.
Thanks for the link for clarification Joe. I think that for now, I will follow Susan’s advice and just hold off.

Thanks Joe. lumy95 I suspect that when MS makes recommendations it’s because there are known issues but at the same time not all computers are necessarily affected; so I’ll count my blessings but will re-visit my habit to keep up with MS Windows Updates and follow Susan’s Patch Watch

        HI All,

I did the update several days back and now I cannot use Windows Update. I get error message #80246002 which ties directly back to the update KB2993651.

        Any thoughts?

Uninstall the update? Do a System Restore to a time before the update when the system was running well?

Apologies for joking about it, but that at least temporarily answers any question about whether you should keep installing new updates.

      That’s what I did after I BSOD’d.

Now KB2993651 sits in my Updates queue awaiting September’s black patch Tuesday. I want to see if MS modifies it like they did for KB2982791.

See my links in post #6.
