So I have a user that just moved to a new windows 11 and in the move – while he has the SAME M365 subscription as before – he now has the new Office with only icons and no labels in the quick access toolbar.

Microsoft dear, us old brains like labels – we don’t translate icons that well.  Is there any way to get the labels back?  There is no megaphone to roll back off of New office.

Search tip:  Limit your searches to the last year.  As if you search without a year limiting function you get a ton of results that are worthless.

I’m going to see if toggling outlook will also toggle the rest of the change back so I can get my labels back.

Did not work.  Apparently us fuddy duddies who like labels are old school.

          Simplified

          Toggle

          Classic

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

Does new Outlook even have a Quick Access Toolbar like “old” Outlook? Mine doesn’t.

If you mean the command ribbon, you can change from “Show labels as Space Permits” to “Show Labels Always” at (right end of ribbon), Customize (and Save).

This is in Word and Excel.  It’s the shortcuts to save, open, etc.

Box is there in this version

Box is not there in this one:

Version  2302 Build 16130.20766 click to run/Semi-annual enterprise September release on the old Windows 10

Version 2302 Build 16130.20810 click to run Semi-Annual Enterprise. October release on the new Windows 11

The box to show labels is gone in build 16130.20810.

The Microsoft answer in this thread provides a registry fix to force-enable the visual refresh (which includes the QAT labels option) on restart of Office apps:

We have the new version which does not have labels. I dont read that this will bring labels back.

Only the new version has labels:

Labels: To help you differentiate commands in the QAT, we now support showing command labels.

Visual update in Office for Windows now available!

A post from 3 years ago. That’s like 40 years in Microsoft 365 changes.  There is no check box anymore on this newly installed Windows 11 22H2.

Let me ask you this – do you have Microsoft 365 and do you see labels in your quick access toolbar?  If so, what exact version are you using?

              When did “new” Office start?

Yes, if displayed below the ribbon.

              Version 2310 (Build 16924.20106).

(But I normally have QAT above ribbon and no labels because hover tooltips work fine if needed.)
