No, you don’t need to spend $1 K on a Google Pixelbook, or $500 on a Samsung Chromebook Pro. There are good, cheaper Chromebooks that still pack all t

The Samsung Chromebook Pro has no “normal” USB ports, just type C.

Windows users should note that some Windows apps can now run on a Chromebook. If this interests you, shop for a Chromebook with an Intel CPU that also supports Android. Many meet this criteria.

The Acer Chromebook  Woody linked to looks like it’s on sale at various online retailers for less than $290.   Maybe Amazon will drop the price for Black Friday too.

AAFES = $229 (no tax)  AAFES has recently opened up for Vets too.

Best Buy = Looks like it dropped too,  from $299 to $249.

AAFES is also free shipping for orders over $50.  I’m retired, a light user and now have 2 chromebooks and couldn’t be happier.  I have a Samsung 11.5 inch that has Play Store and an HP 14 inch that’s waiting.  My Gateway laptop is now in the extra bedroom hooked up to a TV that I don’t have on Comcast. It seems there are some things  I still need Windows for (like updating my GPS) so every now and again I’ll update the Gateway and live happily with the Chromebooks.  Updating, backup so much easier.  I’ll still keep an eye out for Woody  as I have been since my first Vista desktop. You name the Dummies book, I probably have it.

Apparently, it’s not too difficult to put Linux (of your choosing) on a Chromebook (or at least some Chromebooks), so that’s an option too.  Chrome OS itself is a Linux distro, apparently.

I’ve been looking for a good Chromebook that’s under $500 (under $400 would be even better) that doesn’t suck and has support for Android apps. Having a backlit keyboard is preferred. I’ve been eyeing an Acer Chromebook 14 or even a 15. Any other suggestions? I’m not exactly looking to completely dump Windows (Too many legacy programs) but it would be nice if I could have a Chromebook for travel and school and leave this Windows laptop at home.

Don’t know about the android or backlight.    I spent a good bit of time researching CBs and decided the Acer 14 was the best value/cost for me.   At $229 (AAFES) I think it’s a steal.
