AskWoody PlusJanuary 23, 2023 at 6:17 am #2526107A college math professor friend told me recently that they now have AI programs that can read a written calculus problem (i.e., a story problem) and solve it. Then there is the problem I had typing this as the autofill function, or whatever you call it, kept trying to complete my sentences for me. Wrong, of course.

Midjourney, DeviantArt face lawsuit over AI-made art
Lawyer known for GitHub Copilot case to argue artists’ legal struggle
UPDATED On Friday three artists filed a proposed a class action suit against major AI image generating companies – Stability AI, Deviant Art and Midjourney – alleging they infringed on copyright laws through the use of collage tool Stable Diffusion.
“Stable Diffusion contains unauthorized copies of millions – and possibly billions – of copyrighted images. These copies were made without the knowledge or consent of the artists,” their lawyer, Matthew Butterick, alleged on the litigation website on Friday.
Stability AI released text-to-image tool Stable Diffusion in August 2022. It was trained on pairs of images and captions scraped from the web.
It learns to identify common themes, styles, and elements among the training images, and combines these parts to form new artwork from written descriptions provided by the user. If you ask for a frog playing a toaster like it was a guitar, you’ll get an image from the model that more or less looks like that, drawing upon what was seen and learned during the training process.
Butterick alleged that whether the final images resemble the training image does not matter as it competes with the originals in the marketplace.
“At minimum, Stable Diffusion’s ability to flood the market with an essentially unlimited number of infringing images will inflict permanent damage on the market for art and artists,” said the legal eagle before pointing out Stable Diffusion is not licensed and calling it a “parasite.”..

AskWoody PlusJanuary 24, 2023 at 12:37 pm #2527924CNET pauses publishing AI-written stories after disclosure controversy
In a staff call on Friday, CNET leadership told staff it was pausing all AI-generated content for now. Top executives at Red Ventures, the firm that owns CNET and other websites, also offered more details on the company’s AI tool…
The call, which lasted under an hour, was held a week after CNET came under fire for its use of AI tools on stories and one day after The Verge reported that AI tools had been in use for months, with little transparency to readers or staff. CNET hadn’t formally announced the use of AI until readers noticed a small disclosure.
“We didn’t do it in secret,” CNET editor-in-chief Connie Guglielmo told the group. “We did it quietly.”..
The AI, which is as of yet unnamed, is a proprietary tool built by Red Ventures, according to Davis. AI editors are able to choose domains and domain-level sections from which to pull data from and generate stories; editors can also use a combination of AI-generated text and their own writing or reporting…
