• Is it my video card

I have recently been receiving error messages from XP Home. Windows has detected and corrected a hardware problem. Please reboot. At the same time my video goes from 1024×768 to basic VGA mode. This has happened 4 times in the past 3 days. When I reboot, things go back to normal (until the next time).
I am assuming it is my video card going bad. How can I find out what windows thinks it is?
    Thanks,
    Craig

Have you looked in the System Event Log (and, less likely, in the Application Event Log) for messages around the time the problems occurred? There may be something fairly cryptic which could give a clue or two.

One way to get into Event Viewer is Start => Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Event Viewer

      JohnGray & CowboyDawg,
Thanks for your posts. Soon after I posted this, the video card went a bit crazy. I took it out and re-seated it again, without benefit. Things started freezing. The card I had in there was getting old. I also noticed the fan wasn’t working. So I went out and bought a new card. (GEForce FX5200 128MB). I don’t play high end games and the computer is old enough that it is not worth paying $400 for a high end card (this one was $99 at BestBuy).
What I did notice is that the picture is brighter and there are no shadows going left to right from dialog boxes. Looks like my old IBM G74 monitor is still working well (I wanted an LCD monitor)
      Anyway, thanks for your help.

Craig, (I wanted an LCD monitor)
I’m sure you can convince yourself that getting a nice new graphics card is an excuse for buying an LCD monitor!
