Still cannot “trash” an entry if one, after submitting it, discovers that one was either wrong in writing that, or things one did not know at the time of writing had already made the entry irrelevant.

And I wish to express my personal desire to see the list of forums again running from the middle to the bottom of the brown sidebar, as before. They  are now in “Forums”, in the menu bar at the top of every page, yes, but they are all bunched close together there and, for me at least, harder to see and find than was the case with the previous arrangement. The one thing gained is that not having those forums listed in the sidebar, more “Recent Replies” can get listed because there is more space for them. But, if the site’s speed remains reasonably high, as at the moment, one can find recent postings that drop out of the brown sidebar as they are, eventually, pushed out by newer ones, easily and quickly enough by looking in the “New Posts” section for “Last Day”, if not there, then in the “Last Three Days”, etc. Just saying.: I imagine you cannot please everybody.

But the ability to trash one’s own entries completely when necessary is a very useful thing still missing.

You’re right – the Forums list no longer appears.

That was a custom widget – and may have been disabled pending some assessment of all custom programming on the site.

(I can’t help but wonder if some of the custom stuff on the side is causing the slowdowns — maybe even the instability….)

If you hadn’t said it, I would have. I find that customizing any computer system multiplies greatly the chances of a system error or worse. Voice of experience here, with Windows and Linux. (Although, there are also times when system-level changes are part of an update or an upgrade — again, both Windows and Linux have these issues.)

Anyway, it’s great to have the site here up and running at least as fast and responsive as I remember it. And with most of the features working the way they are supposed to. The weekend was a nightmare!!

@woody, I still have one odd thing happening. You know how when you go back into a thread, or refresh the page, any new posts that came in since the last visit there are tagged as “new”? Well, in this thread every post beginning May 24 continues to be marked as “new” for me, no matter how many times I refresh the page.

Fortunately, thanks to your team’s dedication, once again we can attach images to our posts,  so here is an image of what I’m talking about:

      Woody-new-posts

That is the only thread I’ve tried where this is happening; every other thread I have visited is working as before this weekend’s hiccups (and much faster BTW).

Not sure if you or the administrator team would consider this worth looking into, but I’m reporting it in case it indicates something important.

      Keep up the great work.

“New”? What is that? I’ve never, ever seen that here! I see from Cybertooth’s screenshot what I should see now and should have seen in the past…but I have NEVER seen that! I usually come here on Basilisk which is forked off of Fx 52 ESR by the Pale Moon folks. I use Waterfox some and have never seen “new” there either. Is the “New” tag disabled, perhaps, if you always have a tab open to the site (or two or three)? I usually have at least 70 tabs open on Basilisk all the time and one (or more is to here).

The ONE thing I most wish the software here offered is a very basic function that I have NOT found missing at any other forum I frequent. That is the ability to choose MY time zone! It is a constant hassle to even LOOK at all at the times on posts here because they are so wildly different from MY Hawaii Standard Time zone that it is confusing. When I post this it will appear HOURS INTO THE FUTURE. This is something that was true for many forums 20 years ago but today….geez.

Agreed. Even worse, there are a few small corners of the site that use different time zones — Central US time for some, Pacific US time for others.

It’s definitely on my to-do list.

I’m wondering why the AKB2000003 topic at https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/2000003-ongoing-list-of-group-b-monthly-updates-for-win7-and-8-1/ is grayed out for me. Is this a peculiarity of the setup on my particular machine (I’m traveling with a small Chromebook I don’t use all the time), or did I miss something about an address change? I keep it in my Favorites and haven’t seen this before.

Thanks to everyone for all their hard work on the site. It’s definitely much improved.

Aaarrrgghhhh, now I am not getting the “new” tag on new posts anywhere except for that MS-DEFCON thread.

Nor is there an “Edit” button for posts I’ve previously submitted in any thread. Will check this one (of course) when it’s posted in case there is a time limit for editing posts.

EDIT: Now the Edit button is there on this post. But older posts don’t have it. I don’t recall there previously being a limit on how long one had to edit a post, has this changed?

      • #1749946

No, it hasn’t changed. There’s always been a time limit – and for good reason. If you post something that says

        The sky is blue.

And somebody responds agreeing with you — but you then change the post to say

        The sky is green.

Much hilarity will ensue. There’s a reason why we’ve always had a time limit on making edits to your own posts. (Or deleting them, for that matter.)

        • #1750103

Huh, I’ve been posting here for some time and had never noticed the Edit button disappearing.

Be that as it may, what then is the time limit for editing posts? After refreshing this page, I see that the post of mine that you replied to, no longer has the Edit button and that was barely an hour ago as I write these words. So is the time frame for editing a post, 1 hour after posting?

        • #1750130

I gotta say, I never noticed a limit either. There have been times where I posted something here and decided about an hour or two later that I should edit something out or maybe just delete it altogether. I understand limits to some extent, but NOT quickly expiring limits. I never noticed editing time limits either, but if they were in place and I didn’t notice them, that’s obviously fine.

Your example about the sky is kind of malicious in the sense that the poster is attempting to make others look like fools. If someone does choose to do that, why not just penalize them instead of everyone? I do think it’s important to have a long window for editing or deleting posts, but perhaps deleting could be disabled once a reply to that post has been made and you lose the ability to edit your posts in a stealthy manner. In your “sky” example, the edited post would show what time it was edited and could not be hidden by the editor.

Also, it still takes a lot of time “Waiting for http://www.askwoody.com….” when loading the page or replying to posts for me, but once it starts loading, it’s super fast. It took a good 20 seconds for this reply box to appear after clicking “Reply” on your post.

How frequently would you like the moderating team to check up on historic posts?

We’re stuck with a relatively limited feature set/options list with the site software, extra plugins to give such fine grained settings would increase the attack area and perhaps lead to further slowdowns, vulnerabilities and an increased chance of instability.

That’s the idea. You didn’t notice them because the time allotted for editing your post hadn’t expired and was sufficient.

Your example about the sky is kind of malicious in the sense that the poster is attempting to make others look like fools.

I think Woody’s example was a glittering generality, a “for instance” if you will, in the simplest form.

If someone does choose to do that, why not just penalize them instead of everyone?

The idea isn’t to penalize anyone, it’s to give everyone an even playing field. As such, rules have to be in place. 99.99% of all posts are looked at by one moderator or another, still we can’t watch every post continuously. The rules in effect allow the site, posters and viewers (hopefully) the best experience possible. Does it meet everyone’s idea of perfection? No, it is what it is.

Something changed between this morning and now (take timestamp of this message and go back 4 hours.)

Earlier today the site felt normal to me, as in – every page loaded as fast as a page on pretty much any other forum site I use regularly. Call it a second to five seconds to load anything – which was a HUGE improvement over what it’s been like for the last few months. Previously entering the site took 30 to 45 seconds, with page loads within the site taking 25-35 seconds.

But this afternoon, while still not as slow as it used to be, the pages are taking 10 to 15 seconds. So whatever you turned back on since about four hours ago needs an examination.

If we are to believe it, the “freshness” information displayed for the Windows 8.1 Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile sub-forum suggests that AskWoody member @b posted here well over 16 years ago regarding the mobile version of Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.  So @b would have been posting about one of these operating systems close to a decade before either of them was introduced. 🙂

I did not block ads here in the past (turned off ublock origin) and saw ads here but never saw any tags about “new posts” so I am not sure that is the reason why I didn’t see them then and don’t see them now. I thought there were no ads now for logged in members so I have not disabled uBlock and it is blocking 2 requests (1%) for askwoody.com domain but allowing all the others here.

As for cookies, I have 10 from AskWoody but that could be the culprit as I have NEVER allowed third party cookies anywhere. After Mozilla (Basilisk is based off Fx 52 ESR) dropped Ask Me setting for cookies, I had to get an extension, Cookie Controller, to manage cookies. It is set to allow all first party cookies here for Session and to block all third party ones. I don’t see the “new post” on any browser but I block (and always have) all third party cookies.

On further examination, I see that uBlock is blocking GOOGLE ADS at this site…but I thought the site was ad free now?

That’s not the way that the “new” tags worked until last week. One could be (logged in) in a thread, simply hit the refresh button (F5), and any new posts that came in since the previous refresh would show up as “new”.

In any event, it would be onerous to have to log out and then log back in every single darned time that one simply wished to see what new posts had come in. My AskWoody.com browser tabs stay up for weeks at a time when there is a hot discussion going on, and up until the last few days there has never been a problem with new posts being tagged.

I agree.  This has been my experience also.  Either refresh with F5 (Firefox) or revisit the replies after viewing the main AskWoody.com page.

I always check the “Remember me” box, so once logged in, I stay logged in for a week or more.  Eventually I get logged out (which I don’t always realise at first) and have to log back in again.  Maybe there is a time limit on how many days you can stay logged in, even with “Remember me” checked.

I thought the site was ad free now?

        We’re getting there.

I’m waiting for things to stabilize before putting together a group of sleuths to hunt down every last vestige of the old advertising. You can see the Patreon ads, for example, and those need to go. Google advertising has been banished, but I’m not completely convinced about the beacons.

It’s a complex situation. Want to help?

It seems the posts here are now “auto updating”. I always have one or more tabs open to this site on Basilisk and am logged in. I just noticed that when I clicked on a tab open to this thread that I saw all these new posts since PKCano’s which was the last one I had read earlier.

I did NOT refresh the thread when I clicked on the tab that was open to this thread but I saw new posts below PKCano’s. If the threads are auto updating now that would explain why I don’t see “new posts” tags (but would not explain why I never saw them in the past unless PKCano is correct).

        • #1761270

How do you find new posts then Joe? I haven’t found an ideal solution. I use “Recently active topics” and keep a note of the time I searched. I then just look at threads with a newer time than that the next time I look. One problem with this method is that if a thread has a reply to a post halfway along that thread, you’ve then got to look carefully if any other new post elsewhere in the thread. Easy if it has few posts, but a nightmare if it has 30 or more.

I’ve tried these but there’s nothing like the new posts button on WSL. These gave you a list of the threads but there was a menu item added in each thread which took you to the first new post.

“new posts since last visit” has always given me none – even after logging out and back in
“new posts last day” – only gives you the thread not the posts
I use “recently active posts” – same issue

We’ve lost the new reply icon, though that took you to the latest post, not necessarily to the first new post in the thread.

For me anyway, the “New Posts Since Last Visit” link is not accurately reflecting what it should.

I write this based on the fact that, if I click on the “New Posts: Last Day” link, I will see a number of posts that have been added since my last visit, but which do not show on “New Post Since Last Visit” list.  This is happening on three different computers of mine.

Could this be some sort of cookie problem/setting on my computers, or a growing pain still from the changeover?

@nightowl, yup, that’s exactly what I saw. But when I went to try it, I attempted to type that last line using various special characters in a variety of colors. The special characters showed up, but the whole line came out in black type.

Here’s another try, using the labels associated with each selected color and everything in boldface so that it stands out better:

        <span style=”color: #ff0000;”>Red <span style=”color: #0000ff;”>Blue <span style=”color: #808080;”>Dark Gray</span></span></span>

As I type this reply, the three colors show up as intended on the screen. Let’s see what they look like when I hit the Submit button…

        • #1794621

Small mistake in the label I gave the last color, it’s supposed to be “Gray” and not “Dark Gray.” But the colors are not actually showing up. Here is what I saw in the reply box as I was typing it:

          Woody-colors
And here is what showed up on the screen after hitting Submit:

          Woody-colors-2
A mod will probably clean up the HTML or whatever that is, but if the end result is the same as for the “nicework” post, that whole line will be black instead of Red, followed by Blue, followed by Gray.

          • #1794627

Remembering the site only includes support for Simple BBCodes, the colors are not meant to be supported features, which is why that toggle was not previously visible. I’m not sure why it is showing now, but I suspect it shouldn’t be…

3 users thanked author for this post.
    • #1799072

      @ Kirsty

… the site only includes support for Simple BBCodes, the colors are not meant to be supported feature

*The site* appears to support colored fonts just fine. I’ve been using NightOwl in my signature for a long time. And others who have posted bbCode for various functions have also shown colored text formatting.

The variable seems to be that text color formatting has to actually be *simple bbCode*, and for unexplained reasons, this Reply Editor uses something other than *simple bbCode* for text color formatting in the *Visual Tab*.

Here’s the *simple bbCoding* I use in my signature:

      [i][color color=#ff0000][b]NightOwl[/b][/color][/i]

And here’s the bbCoding used by the *Visual Tab* of the Reply Editor:

      <span style=”color: #ff0000;”>NightOwl</span>

What’s not supported by the Reply Editor is there’s just no pre-formatted editing button(s) for adding color content to a reply post in the *Text Tab* (one has to insert the bbCode manually), and the font formatting button for text color in the *Visual Tab* works just fine–within the editor itself–but after hitting the *Submit* button, the code that the editor is using for colored font text is removed by some other function.

(I have to assume that the *bbCode* used by the *Visual Tab* in the Reply Editor is *advanced bbCode* and not *simple bbCode*.)

      Simple bbCode that should work:

      [color color=#ff0000][b]Red, [/b][/color][color color=#0000ff][b]Blue, [/b][/color][color color=#808080][b]Gray[/b][/color]

      Red, Blue, Gray

*Visual Tab* bbCode that probably will not work:

      <span style=”color: #ff0000;”>Red <span style=”color: #0000ff;”>Blue <span style=”color: #808080;”>Gray</span></span></span>

      <span style=”color: #ff0000;”>Red <span style=”color: #0000ff;”>Blue <span style=”color: #808080;”>Gray</span></span></span>

Let’s see the results … hitting *Submit* …

(Edit: Interestingly, the simple bbCode used in the *Text Tab*, if you switch to the *Visual Tab*–the text color formatting is not *understood* by the *Visual Tab*, and the colors do not show up–strange inconsistency between two functions (text tab vs visual tab) in the same Editor.)

“502 Bad Gateway” messages are a sign that the site’s screwed up. Currently the devs are merging the last of the Topics and Replies. The update’s supposed to be throttled, so as not to overwhelm the server. Supposed to be….

Right now it appears to be OK, but I say that with fingers crossed and wood duly knocked. At some point we’ll get back to stability. Just not sure when that point will arrive.

Same here as other two posters on this thread just above on June 8th. Had nothing but the “bad gateway -502” error today after a very long wait for the main AskWoody page to come up. Due to that, I haven’t even tried logging in. This time, it “only took about a minute and a half to get the page to display after typing it into my browser’s address bar.

Let’s see how long the page takes to actually “post” (refresh showing a yellow box for pending mediation anonymous post) this entry.

Been having trouble accessing askwoody’s site intermittently for the last few days. When I check isitdownrightnow.com, the website indicates that the askwoody site is down for everyone for ~ 1 day and 19 hrs. Also when I check downforeveryoneorjustme.com this site indicates that the askwoody.com website is down for everyone. The results from isitdownrightnow.com and downforeveryoneorjustme.com are clearly wrong since I am currently accessing the site fine right now. Seems I spoke too soon, when I tried to refresh the webpage after posting around 3pm cst discovered the askwoody site was again down for me. Also at some point saw a 502 gateway error.

At this time 5/29/19 3:37 AM EDT. everything I’m checking in the posts I’m interested in is zipping right along very quickly.

Here it is a week later Wed 6/5/19 2:55 PM EDT and everything is till zipping along. As a new person here I want to extend my appreciation for the team working on the solutions for ensuring all that needs to be addressed.

I must be one of the lucky ones as my computer is still zipping along real fine. I haven’t seen the 502 gateway error but I probably need to allow for the fact I missed the Window for when I might have run into it at the time it occurred if it was a global issue.

Hmmm, the weirdest thing just happened. I was scrolling the askwoody home page with the mouse scroll wheel and it just stopped scrolling. I checked other tabs in Chrome and it works fine and if I right click a reply to open in a new window on askwoody, it scrolls fine.

      Maybe a Ghost 🙂

Update: after refreshing the home page to see my reply populate, it scrolls fine now, LOL WEIRD!!

Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does 🙂

That’s nice! (Green) Red too!  But I gather the colors get removed in posting.

      Edit:  Well, that’s ugh!

“Keep a log of this edit?”  I don’t recall seeing that before.

Moderator edit: Removed HTML. “Keep log”, uncheck box to prevent your edit showing. Once the edit shows it can not be removed.

Things are running great today and seem to be back to normal!  Home page loaded in a few seconds, same for log in, going to different parts of the site are relatively quick.  I hope it stays that way.    🙂

All we need now is for the “new” tags to be fixed. It’s really hard to find nested replies by date and time.

      cheers, Paul

I noticed a new glitch: the newest posts (at least, the ones posted by me) are not getting listed in the “Recent Replies” section over in the right-hand panel.

As I write this post, the most recent reply listed there is by @wavy in the Intel Optane thread, 58 minutes ago. However, I posted in that thread about a half-hour ago: it’s not showing up in Recent Replies.

I have been seeing the same thing since I logged in this morning. The posts eventually get there, but there is quite a lag.

It seems to be a return of caching issues, which has been evident since the default widget was reactivated yesterday. Still, it does have benefits over the limited-function custom widget that we’d been running for a few days…
          🙂
