Is ABBYY still being developed in Russia?

I’m a reasonably satisfied ABBYY user, but have been uncomfortable with the idea of installing software developed in Russia on my system. Accordingly, I have not upgraded in the past three years.

I see that ABBYY is now a US corporation with at least some offices in the US. But where is development happening?

I’ve seen news reports that they have completely cut ties with Russia, but most of what I’ve read seems to come from ABBYY directly or indirectly.

IMO there’s a difference between software products that, by necessity, have access to the OS core, i.e. its ‘kernel’, like AV products such as Kaspersky.

ABBYY products – which I’m a long-time user of and fan of – FineReader, especially – do not need such invasive access… so I’m happy to continue using them whilst they remain useful, irrespective of where they are developed. Just because developers live in different countries shouldn’t automatically cause us any concern.

Whether others make that same differentiation is down to personal choice.

Upon the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, that began in 2022, ABBYY immediately began closing its operations in Russia — stopped all sales, development, and provision of services in Russia and Belarus.[15] As of October 2024 ABBYY’s former Russian legal entities are liquidated.
